Exercise

Hi ladies. I'm rather new to this board, just got my BFP on Monday. What's the concensus on exercising. I normally take a spin class twice a week and yoga once a week. Im thinking the yoga is fine to continue but during spin the instructors bring our heart rates up to 85-92%. Is this no longer ok or is it too early for me to be worried

Re: Exercise

My dr said it was fine to continue spin if I had been doing it regularly, which I had. I found I was too nervous (and too tired lol) to do so though.

Re: Exercise

I kept working out same as I had been until I started throwing up every morning (around 9 1/2 weeks until 14 weeks) -- I cut back a little and stopped doing spin and just did the other classes I usually do. As I got further in my pregnancy, I stopped doing combat because all the twisting was too much for me. I did step and weights until I was 32 weeks and went to the gym until I was 36 weeks.

My doctor never said anything to me about watching my heartrate but said to stay SUPER hydrated and to listen to my body. If my body was telling me something was too much, not to push it.

Re: Exercise

I had to stop exercising in the beginning because a simple walk on the treadmill on an incline made me feel really uncomfortably out of breath, and my heart rate went way up. I don't know why. I wish I could have kept going, but my body was telling me no. On the other hand, I know women who do 5k's while pregnant. Listen to your body - it knows what it's doing and it will tell you when enough's enough. If you can keep up in your spin classes, keep at it! The "conventional" wisdom is not to keep your heart rate over 140 for any length of time because it diverts blood away from your baby to keep your heart pumping faster, but if you were super fit before, then your threshold is probably higher.

Re: Exercise

i didn't exercise for the first 12w because i was so sick and tired, but doc said i was fine to keep exercising at 70% of my normal capacity and said not to let heartrate get too high.
i'm back to exercising now at almost 15w but i just don't feel comfortable doing all the leg work i used to do. my hip joints just don't feel right and i don't want to put any additional strain on my lower body.
i've just been walking on the treadmill at a slight incline.

Re: Exercise

I teach Spin classes and it's been fine. You definitely have to modify it a bit, don't let your heart rate get as high, 90% is definitely high, I keep it around 70%. It's hard to get used to when you are used to pushing yourself to the limit, but the baby needs that blood supply too - especially in the beginning!
I had to stop teaching kickboxing bc it's not really safe as a PP mentioned with all the twisting.

Most exercise is fine as long as you stay hydrated and keep yourself at a point where you can speak in a full sentence without taking a breath.

I was told not to bring my heart rate past 140. You can do spin until your not comfortable just modify it, I would also let the instructor know your pg.

Re: Exercise

I am 36 weeks and just stopped taking spin classes a week ago because it is uncomfortable on my back now. Just take the intensity down a bit (I just didnt raise the resistance much and even less the more pregnant I got). I felt great doing it all along, and my dr. said it was fine because I did it a few days a week before getting pregnant.
