if you took birthing classes
what classes did you take and where? were they helpful? how much did they cost?
we are delivering at LIJ and i was going to sign up for their courses but they are so expensive. im looking for a good birthing class and breastfeeding class and maybe a baby-care class.
if anyone has taken any of these please share your experiences.
thanks!

Re: if you took birthing classes
We took the one at LIF last week. It has a complimentary BFing class which I have to sign up for.
We LOVED the woman who gave the class and learned a bunch.
It was 160 or something like that. We did the one day class. It helped give us some breathing techniques and some ideas of what to expect. Even DH was glad we took it.

Re: if you took birthing classes
we are taking ours through NY Presbyterian. It's $300 but more comprehensive so it covers birth and newborn care etc. $300 is expensive, but it's covered by my FSA plan so I don't care.
This comprehensive 3 week series is designed for couples seeking in-depth information related to labor and delivery, breastfeeding and newborn care. We cover anatomical and physiological changes during pregnancy, signs and stages of labor, when to call your doctor, everything you need to know about labor and delivery, fetal heart monitoring, medications used in labor (epidurals, pitocin), forceps, vacuums, Caesarian sections, Lamaze breathing techniques, the role of the labor support person and what to expect postpartum. Babies don’t come with instructions, so we discuss breastfeeding, newborn care and SIDS prevention as well. You also have the option of viewing a labor video. Classes are conducted in an informal and informative manner; we encourage questions to be sure that each couple’s needs and concerns are met.

Re: if you took birthing classes
I took classes bc I could.. I waited my whole life to be pregnant & I wanted to experience a class however, most of it is all common sense & you can get all the info thats in the classes from other mom's, your mom, your sister, friends, ect....That's JMO being BTDT...
However I we did take the CPR class & that I would say to take!

Same here. Took everything I could there! Childbirth ed, cpr, breastfeeding. I can't remember their prices, but it's all on their website. They are awesome there! All the classes are worth every penny! They also offer a free baby care basics class at Behr's, I think once a month.

Re: if you took birthing classes
Huntington Hopsital offers all of their classes free - except CPR - that's free if you are delivering there.
They have a labor and delivery class and a breastfeeding as well. I'll be taking both of these in the next month. I already attended Pre-Natal I and Pre-natal II and the Infant Care class.

That's great!! How do I go about signing up for these classes? I thought they were only free if you were delivering there. This is great news.

Re: if you took birthing classes
I took free lessons at Stony Brook Hospital that weren't that great, but I also took evening classes at the Suffolk County Jewish Community Center (The Y). You don't have to be a member and they're free. DH and I found them very informative.

i would love to take classes there but they are WAY too expensive. $200 for the childbirth class alone??
at least the LIJ classes give you the hospital tour and the free breastfeeding class. i just cant imagine why it costs $200 and it makes me mad cause it seems like such a great place and a great class.. am i only the only one who feels these classes should be cheap or free???

I do :( I feel like the hospital one should be free! Some hospitals offer it free. IM a little torn too. The hospital one is 190 and you get the tour and I think it said ffree breastfeeding class...so I'm torn on taking it at LIJ or New Belly.
200 is insane IMO!

Having taken all of their classes, I wonder how they even know if you're delivering there. The sign in is very casual....
The schedule is listed on their website.

Re: if you took birthing classes
LOVED my childbirth class with Celeste Racehll. she teaches out of her house in Roslyn. HIGHLY recommended. I think it was about $300 for a six week series. I didn't take a BFing class, but I know BRU hosts them.
