what do you consider your "will not eat/drink" items?
One thing I quickly learned is that everyone has different ideas re what you will or wont eat or drink pregnant.
What do you consider your "absolutely will not eat/drink" items and what do you consider your "will not typically eat/drink... but OK in moderation/special circumstances" items? Do you take the same approach to most of the questionable items or do you consider some more risky than others?
Curious where some of the following fall on your lists: sushi, cold cuts, hotdogs/brats/sausages, soft cheeses, wine, fish, bacon, caffeine, steaks that aren't well done, etc...

Re: what do you consider your "will not eat/drink" items?
The only things I stay away from are alcohol and sushi.
I drink diet coke daily, cold cuts when I feel like it, hotdogs once in a while etc.

Sushi - hard to say because I don't eat it anyway
Cold cuts - haven't eaten yet but i'm a sucker for italian hero. If there's a hero in front of me i will probably have some. Likely won't actively seek it out.
Hot dogs - will eat in moderation, especially because it's summertime and i love bbq hot dogs.
Sausages - didn't know this was something to potentially stay away from? i generally only eat pork sausage from the butcher. haven't desired it at all though.
soft cheeses - avoiding unpasteurized. if it's pasterurized, i'll eat it.
wine - havent had any yet, probably will, on occasion.
fish - no problem with fish. don't eat tuna anyway.
bacon - didn't know this was questionable either.... but it's been one of my bizzare aversions (i'm usually a bacon wh0re)
caffeine - moderation
steaks that arent well done - i only eat steaks/burgers that are well done so this one's n/a

Re: what do you consider your "will not eat/drink" items?
Alcohol- I'm a big drinker, but have had no desire for any alcohol, we'll see if this changes. Raw fish sushi- I love raw tuna, but not worth the risk Hotdogs and cold cuts- don't really eat these anyway, never eat hotdogs.
I'm okay with fish, bacon (though have no desire for it), moderate caffeine and pasteurized cheese.

Nothing.

There's nothing I wouldn't have once, that I normally had before getting pregnant. Obviously everyone is different but I think all those food lists are a load of crap.
I just use my common sense and don't overdo it on anything at all.

Re: what do you consider your "will not eat/drink" items?
This is my opinion on these foods but I tend to be a little paranoid about what I eat.
Sushi - I only eat the "sushi" with veggies or with cooked shrimp normally but if I liked real sushi I wouldn't eat it while preggo.
Cold cuts - I will only eat cold cuts if they are cooked in a dish.
Hotdogs/brats/sausages - I only eat hot dogs that are uncured and don't have nitrates or nitrites anyway so I do the same preggo. I didn't know there was any issue with sausage. I'm going to have to look into this. I always cook my meat well so I've eaten sausage. If you mean the cured kind of sausage and not fresh I have been staying away even though I looooove them.
Soft cheeses - I am only eating pasteurized cheeses.
Fish - I have chosen to not eat any fish or seafood while pregnant. I know doctors say you can eat low mercury fish in moderation but the fact that mercury easily passes through the blood brain barrier scares me. I don't know if I will eat some later on but for now I am staying away. I'm trying to get my Omega 3 from other sources.
Bacon - Same as hot dogs. I only eat uncured bacon with no nitrates or nitrites anyway.
I don't like wine, don't drink caffeine anyway and like all my meat cooked until there is no indication that it was ever alive so I'm no help with these.
Also, I always stay away from artificial sweeteners especially aspartame (Which is not easy by the way. This stuff is in SO many things. You can't buy a regular pack of gum without aspartame. It's even in the regular instant Quaker oatmeal!).

ITA. ive eaten cheeses here and there. cold cuts here and there. sushi a piece or two total. ive been known to take a piece of steak or a burger medium rare although i havent really wanted meat at all. never been into hot dogs and not much of a drinker. i think anything in moderation is fine. i think its silly when someone eats a piece of deli ham and thinks that it was the worst thing in the world. im just not a worrier like that. i hope that doesn't bite me in a$$ one day. but i think it's pretty alarmist to avoid so many things because of risks that are so ridiculously minuscule, meanwhile we all get in our cars everyday where theres a fairly decent chance of getting into an accident. i suppose one is somewhat avoidable, and one not as avoidable depending on the situation, but when it comes down to it ANY food prepared by anyone can make you sick in the right circumstances. so i feel that avoiding certain things isn't even eliminating the risk to begin with. and that's the end of my tirade

Re: what do you consider your "will not eat/drink" items?
Like a few other posters have said, I'm really not going to drive myself crazy. I am friendly w/woman in their late 40's and early 50's when I have mentioned what are "no-no" foods now a days, they all literally look at me like I have 10 heads and laugh their hineys off! My golden rule in life is everything in moderation.
Sushi - LOVE, LOVE, LOVE sushi! Havent had any yet since my BFP. I plan to have it a few times a month, everything cooked
Cold cuts - I only eat turkey and I am actually looking forward to turkey pannis
Hot dogs - I dont like them
Sausages - I dont eat it anyway
soft cheeses - avoiding unpasteurized. if it's pasterurized, i'll eat it. LOVE LOVE CHEESE!
wine - havent had any yet, probably will, on occasion.
fish - no problem with fish, love salmon so, I will prob stick w/it
bacon - I dont it eat anyway
caffeine - moderation, I only drink 1 cup of tea a day even b/f BFP
steaks - I only eat well done meat
The only type of food that I will work very hard to stay way from is pre packaged meals. I have a low tolerance for sodium, and those meals are loaded w/sodium.

Re: what do you consider your "will not eat/drink" items?
i saw my dr. yestersay and he gave me the green light on everything. he didnt restrict anything but basically said use common sense and if you had those "black listed" foods once a week or so it is fine.
I asked about sushi bc I LOVE it and he said go for it. He actually said you have a greater chance of getting some kind of posioning or bacterial infection from eating chicken over sushi!! He did state to eat at busy places that have a high turnover to ensure freshness (with all foods). He basically told me to just eat a healthy balanced diet. I plan on enjoying ALL foods I enjoy normally with moederation.

ITA - even if you compare what posters on here write, it really depends on your doctor. Some doctors give the green light for somethings and other doctors say no for that same thing.
But some things have made me paranoid.
I will have pretty much anything if the mood strikes me but I have not had cold cuts or sushi.

Everything in moderation. I am careful with high mercury fish, always have been. Only thing that has really changed is No alcohol, I just don't see the need for a sip or two. If I am going to drink, I'm gonna DRINK

There is no food or drink that I absolutely won't touch. There are certain foods that I ate before pregnancy that just gross me out now though...oysters, most fish, chinese food.

Re: what do you consider your "will not eat/drink" items?
I'm a vegetarian, so a lot of the no-no foods don't apply.
I don't drink diet soda or drinks anyway, so that didn't change. I think I can count on both hands all the soda I've had the whole time.
I have 1 cup of coffee a day.
I have pretty much stayed away from raw feta (cooked in spinach pie has been my choice).

I basically eat everything in moderation. I only really stay away from sushi and soft cheeses but I have eaten some cheese here and there. I still eat occasionally cold cuts, hot dogs and bacon. And I have even had a glass of wine or 2 in my second trimester.

Re: what do you consider your "will not eat/drink" items?
What's wrong with sausages? I know breakfast sausage has nitrates but I wasn't aware that sausage otherwise was bad...someone please fill me in.
I stay away from
Alcohol - all of it, I haven't even had a sip
Cold Cuts - a couple of times I had a heated up sandwich but I wouldn't eat it cold. I have a hard time with lunch since this what I ate alll the time.
Hot Dogs - I found hot dogs without nitrates and my doctor said I can eat it hot so I've had hot dogs once so far.
Any unpasteurized cheese
Seafood - I will eat in moderation although while on my babymoon i def ate more then i wanted to. I stay away from all high mercury fish and when I do eat I usually go for shrimp or crab.
Caffeine - I will have coffee on the rare occasion, usually if I have a headache or if I am constipated I consider natural relief lol, tylenol doesn't do anything and I am not one for medication so coffee is my best bet.
Bacon - in moderation
I think that's about it.

Re: what do you consider your "will not eat/drink" items?
Very interesting to hear everyone's opinions!
As far as the following, here is where I fall:
Sushi: don't eat pre-pregnancy
Cold cuts: used to eat all the time pre-pregnancy!! had heated cold cuts a few times but generally try to avoid
hotdogs/brats/sausages: had nitrate-free hotdogs once, regular hotdog once, and have been trying to minimize... I did eat a lot of cured sausages on one occasion first tri not realizing they were "bad" and have been avoiding since. was going to eat german food last night which inspired this post, and figured that whether nitrates or listeria the risk was minimal for a dish that includes 3 heated brats shared between me and DH. we're going a different night instead but I think I'm OK to eat that...
soft cheeses: I ask at restaurants if pasteurized
wine: haven't had any yet, may have the occasional sip here and there in Italy. had one o'douls first tri and one last weekend
fish: not a big fish eater generally, avoiding the "bad 4" high mercury fish although I did have chilean sea bass once around 13w
bacon: had nitrate free once, had regular a few times. minimizing but not worrying about it
caffeine: had a 1-2 cup a day habit pre-pregnancy, trying to minimize and had about 6-8 cups first tri, every week or so now. only if i need it...
steaks: minimizing steaks because I dont want to get them well done, getting them medium-well instead of medium, but have eaten pieces that still had some pink in them.
I've also had chicken over rice from a street cart twice.
so far so good... I'm pretty risk-averse and don't want to put for stupid reasons but some of the risks are so remote. I'm still working on finding a balance

My OB said cured meats are risky because of listeria. She said its a very slim chance and heating to steaming might help but cautioned that listeria can be very dangerous. (this came up when we were planning to go out for fondue and I knew the restaurant gives cured meats as dippers)

Re: what do you consider your "will not eat/drink" items?
I will not eat/drink cold cuts, alcohol, soft serve ice cream, any meat that isn't VERY well done, or anything with eggs that isn't completely cooked. I don't eat any seafood anyway, except tuna fish, which I have no more than once a week. I don't eat hot dogs ever. I avoid caffeine altogether for the most part, but maybe once a month or once in 2 months, I might have a small soda or regular coffee, if decaf of either is not available. I eat soft cheeses, that I can verify are pasteurized (which is nearly all cheeses in the U.S.). Oh, and I eat bacon in moderation (I used to eat it like 4 or 5 times a week!).

Re: what do you consider your "will not eat/drink" items?
I'm avoiding sushi/anything raw, and alcohol totally. I've also avoided cold cuts completely, even though I'm really craving a Turkey sandwich or Italian hero.
Fish: I dont like the high mercury fish anyway...only shrimp and a crab really...have this in moderation.
Caffeine: i never drank coffee, only tea. I've been having decaf tea...I will have soda sometimes, but I rarely had that pre-pregnancy...so moderation.
Bacon: It's been a craving...moderation
Soft serve ice cream: moderation
only pastuerized cheeses. not into soft cheeses anyway

Honestly nothing. All the places we eat or the foods I cook are healthy enough and I know where the food is coming from and trust them/us. I don't buy into the whole you must not eat or drink such and such. Moderation, Moderation, Moderation
