Fragrant shrub or plants
I want to plant something (flowers or a shrub) that is fragrant by my deck..any suggestions?
My first thought is lilac, but I was looking for other suggestions.

I was researching Jasmine (the gardening novice that I am!) and it says that it doesn't tolerate below 45 degrees very well (the Jasmine tree) - do you have experience with this? Would I wrap it up for the winter?

Love the lilac shrub. My neighbor has one over the backyard fence and it smells so good when I walk into the backyard. We went tree shopping this weekend and we saw/smelled the magnolia tree. Sooo pretty and smelled soo good! I also love the lavender plants. Ordered some of those too. Happy shopping =)

Depends on how much light you get there. How shady are we talking about? Do you get more than 6 hours of sun per day (when the trees are leafed out)?
I love Mock Orange for fragrance. I use this tool a lot for ideas, you can search by a lot of different values.

Just be careful - fragrant plants draw bees - not so great if it is close to where you will be sitting (also not great if it is in an area where kids will be playing).
If the plant is really fragrant, it can also make food taste funny, since smell plays such a big part in taste

These are always my concerns and why I try not to plant them near our outdoor living areas.

Same here. I love rose bushes and they do well in my yard BUT I am very careful with placement because they bees love them

I have bee and butterfly favorites alongside my patio and the only nuisance insects we've had are wasps (yellow jackets) that aren't typically flower visitors. They go for the soda cans instead, not much I can do about that though.
If someone is allergic to bees of course it's something to consider, but honeybees and bumble bees fly around me and land on me, and I've never been stung. Just wanted to defend them a little bit because I think they get a bad rap, when wasps are more the 'bad guys'.
