I would go for the induction! If there is no benefit to the baby being in the womb past 39 weeks and its putting your health at risk, then why not meet the lo a little early!

Re: I might be induced next week!!!!!!!!! WWYD?????

Kirstin...you know I suffer from chronic high blood pressure (not from pregnancy). With DS they waited only 1 week after my due date to induce me. My dr. wanted to try to avoid a C/S because of my prior surgery history but he didn't want to wait long becaused of my high blood pressure. That being said my blood pressure like yours was great the entire pregnancy through the very end, even though I was 1 week late, was induced and ended up having a C/S.

If all is good you can choose to wait until your due date. They're looking out for your best interest though and if they think inducing at 39 weeks would be best then I would follow their advice.

My dr. knew he wouldn't let me go more than 1 week because of all the risk factors, but he also was weighing my prior surgical history along with the high blood pressure.

I would wait as until the very end of your 39th week, or schedule the induction for the 1st day of your 40th week, that way you did give yourself time to go into labor on your own.

I don't know if there are cons to being induced or not, but the nurse who did my lamaze class did say that the contractions are differnt (I think more intense) if you get induced...but since everyone experiences and handles pain differently, I wouldn't let that affect your decision.

Re: I might be induced next week!!!!!!!!! WWYD?????

I went In to be induced at 37 weeks due to high blood pressure with Abby. Well in 20 min my blood pressure went from 140/80 to 210/120 it was so dangerous and she had to come out. I had an emergency c section 15 min later. My opinion is go for the induction before things get bad! I'm already discussing what my plan is for this baby because my pressures are already starting to spike at 12 weeks. They said it's hard because they like to deliver prior to when the problem started with 1st pregnancy but we cannot schedule before 38 weeks but to expect to deliver between 36 and 37 weeks due to my history. Abby was huge and measuring 4 weeks ahead so I'm not concerned.

Can you be induced and if it doesnt work choose to wait it out?

Im just saying because I was barely 1 cm dialated and was induced a little after 38 weeks (had a medical condition that they deliver early for) and had 3 cervadil and little progress. I ended up with a C/S bc DS was having complications from it.

With inductions, there is an increased risk of needing a C Section anyway. I was induced with DD 3 days past my due date and her heartrate was very erratic due to the drugs used to induce me. Kept fluctuating from 160 to 70- up and down- and I wound up with an emergency c section after 15 hours of labor. You have to decide what is best for you! I dont know ifI'd run the risk in allowing my BP to get high, so I might choose induction, but just know that you could still end up with a C Section. Even if you did, its not the worst thing in the world!

Good luck!!

This is great advice. I agree with Bethany.

I'm not concerned about needing a c section. That's the least of my concerns. I'm more concerned about my health and the baby's health if my bp rises to dangerous levels. That and I'm unsure of the drugs used to induce.

I would say just do the induction and keep the baby out of harms way and yourself of course. You have come too far to start risking stuff...

Are you dilated at all? That would be a factor in my decision. I don't think I would go into it starting from "scratch".

a fingertip! So not really. Chat Icon

I was successfully induced and gave birth vaginally to my DS with absolutely zero signs of anything happening. It took two rounds of cervadil and pitocin, and the dr was able to break my water when i was just a fingertip dilated - so it's totally possible!

Although it is YOUR choice and only YOUR choice, I will share with you that a close friend of mine was rushed in for an emergency c-section and they have to knock you out for it! She missed the birth of her DD and was so upset over it.

Preeclampsia can be very dangerous and I would avoid the possiblity of developing it by all means!

I was induced because my water was slowly leaking (I never had that big gush some have) and although it took 34 1/2 hours for DD to say hello to me, lol, I did have to have a c-section, but since I had the epidural already and the baby wasn't in any danger, they were able to give me the spinal and I was awake to hear my DD's first cry!

Moral:
Avoid scary/dangerous/disappointing moments by all means! Just think, you'll meet your DD 1 week sooner! : ) Good luck : )

I totally understand!
DS was born via C/S because his heart rate was dropping every time I contracted. Obviously, your Dr and staff will be watching you very closely. Mine was there and was very concerned. He didnt want to take any chances that I would need an emergency c/s.

I do not want to scare you, but DS did have some issues when born, he thankfully was 100% fine after, but just something to be prepared for when DC is being born early (and laboring for 30ish hours)

Re: I might be induced next week!!!!!!!!! WWYD?????

If the dr says be induced early & you love and trust your dr Id do it however, since its your first baby, Id want it to happen naturally... Id want to experience all the surprises that labor brings... your head spins to how you will labor and what it will be like, will your water break... all that good stuff so in a way Id feel I was robbing myself of that however if your health is at risk what are you doing to do...Wait till Friday and see what the other dr says & take it from there!!!

All of this won't matter once that baby is here so try and keep that in mind!! Good Luck!

You asked if there were negatives to an induction and there certainly are -- increased chance of C-section is a big risk. Also, although pitocin is used a lot there is not much research on its long-term affects. Of course, if an induction is truly medically necessary you should go for it.

I think you need to listen to your self and your body. If your blood pressure has been normal and you and baby looks good, I can't see a reason to rush an induction. You will be going to the doctor often as you get near the end and they will be monitoring your blood pressure.

I have to disagree with any doctor who says there is no reason to be pregnant after 39 weeks -- that simply isn't true -- some babies just need more time and it does benefit them to stay in the womb. Now, I could understand a doctor saying, there are medical conditions where the risks of staying pregnant outweigh the risks of induction at 39 weeks (and pre-enclempsia certainly is one of them), but that's different.

Do some research on Bishop's scores -- this will give you an idea of how likely a successful induction will be.

Good luck with whatever choose!

thanks. C section is seriously the furthest from my worries. I'm not completely opposed to it if it's necessary. There is also a chance of a c section if my blood pressure rises so I'm really damned if I do, damned if I don't, I feel. Plus the c section I would get if my blood pressure rises would be one where I would be put under. So thats worse IMO not even remembering or being awake during her birth.

I'm so sorry you're in this position. I teach hypnosis, so I'm going to tell you not to think about the C-section and really visualize your beautiful baby coming into this world easily and peacefully.

You might research evening primrose oil, which will help ripen the cervix and might make an induction easier.
