What is my baby supposed to sleep in?

I feel like I ask the dumbest questions, oy.

Our baby will be born sometime in the next month or so. She'll be sleeping in our room with us. We're planning to have the AC on (on low, since we know we can't freeze out the baby, despite how cold WE like it) over the summer, and until then, we always sleep with the window open.

What do I put her in to sleep? A onesie and a swaddler? Are there special pajama onesies that I'm just missing somehow?

Thanks for the support for the dummy mom-to-be ... Chat Icon

if it's going to be cold in your room, i'd probably put her in fleece pjs and swaddle her. it all depends on the temperature of your room!

PS: that's totally not a dumb question. you should hear the questions i ask Chat Icon.

I'm sort of in the same boat as you... since I'm due July 3rd.

I'm planning on doing sleep sacks.

DD bedroom will be right off of our bedroom and we will be sharing an AC unit... I want to make sure she's warm. A onsie and sleep sack. Perhaps even fleece pj's... mini size!!

Thanks everyone! I just ordered a bunch of footie pjs and long sleeved bodysuits. They aren't selling much fleece pjs from what I can see, so I figure I can put her in an extra onesie underneath the pjs if she's cold, and then swaddle/sleep sack her too.

Thanks so much!Chat Icon

Re: What is my baby supposed to sleep in?

One layer more than you and your DH are comfortable in. So if you guys sleep in t-s and pants, then a onesie with a sleep & play over it is fine. If you sleep in long sleeves, then a long sleeve onesie and sleep & play over it. If you're swaddling too, that counts as a layer.

Fleece PJs are WAAAAAY too warm IMHO. I have several we never used, and it was in the 30s when DD was born.

You change the baby's clothes like 3x a week at the beginning (especially before you can bathe them much)... you really don't need that much.

You'll figure it out. Chat Icon Don't worry about planning too much in advance... it takes some time to figure out the types of clothes YOU like to use on your child, too. I like snaps. Some people swear by zippers. Amazon mom is 2-day free delivery... you don't have to get stuff now. Just hang out and see. It's hard to be patient and you want to be prepared, but believe me, you waste a lot of money trying to prep too much in advance.

ITA...I think that the fleece pjs will be way too warm as well!...With the AC, I would suggest the sleep and plays as well with a swaddle

Re: What is my baby supposed to sleep in?

Charlie was born June 10th...we swaddled her so she slept in a onesie and light socks (depending on the temp).
If you're not going to swaddle, I'd do light cotton footies.

The rule of thumb (according to my Ped) is one more layer than what you're wearing.

Re: What is my baby supposed to sleep in?

DD was born on July 1 and slept in our room for the summer with our AC going. She slept in either footie cotton pjs and the swaddle or a onesie and the swaddle. That seemed sufficient because we never had the AC on too cold.

Re: What is my baby supposed to sleep in?

When DD was born in August, we had the AC on in our coop....She slept in long sleeved sleep and play and she was swaddled. Once she was breaking free of the swaddle, I would use a sleep sack.

In the winter we'd put her in a short sleeved onesie and a long sleeve fleece sleep sack...but that was the only time we used fleece pajamas of any kind.

-Sleep Sacks (cotton & fleece)
-Sleepers (cotton & fleece)

Re: What is my baby supposed to sleep in?

I wouldnt do fleece. We are in FL and it's been very hot, we keep the AC on 69 and it's cold in here. She sleeps in a cotton 'sleep & play' and is swaddled tightly on top of that. She is still a bit clammy, but is content. I think babies sweat alot when they sleep anyway.

Re: What is my baby supposed to sleep in?

we also bought this this thing that we plan to keep in los room or in ours if he is with us to ensure the temp is good for him. It was like 25 at BRU and its so easy to use, this may help.

DH and I loveeeeee the cold air, but r afraid without this we'd freeze out baby

Re: What is my baby supposed to sleep in?

You don't want the baby to overheat - I'd just put him/her in a long sleeve onesie or cotton PJs and swaddle - not a sleepsack AND a swaddle.......that's too much IMO
But I think as long as his legs and arms are covered, he won't be TOO cold in the AC, but he won't overheat w/ too much on either -

Also, you have to keep in mind if YOU are hot, baby is most likely hot too - I never understand when people have babies bundled up in 85 degree weather -

We keep our house very cool - even in the winter our heat is on 60 - 62 @ night otherwise we're all up and can't breathe ........
