Renting a tent for outdoor party? WWYD?
I had a bad experience with DD#1's 2nd b-day. It was beautiful all morning while we were setting up. We had a bounce house, sound system, etc. We did rent tables and chairs. As the guests came, so did the rain!
So I'm trying to prepare for our next outdoor party. I'm looking to rent tables and chairs plus a tent (20x20) to cover our patio. It will cost between $270-$350, depending on where we get the stuff. But I'm thinking of buying 2 10x20 tents instead. They will cost a total of about $200. That doesn't include rental of tables and chairs, but then we'll have the tents forever.
WWYD?
ETA: table and chair rental would be about $120.

That's exactly what I'm going to do for DD's christening except I'm only buying one tent. I think it's a great idea because then you have the tents forever and you can lend them out if other family members need them.

If you don't mind me asking, what do the tents you are purchasing look like and from where are you buying them? We are having DS's birthday in our backyard in June and I wanted to rent a tent...DH doesn't think it's necessary....needless to say we will be getting a tent! I figured if I had some info to show him, maybe it would best for us to just purchase one and then we would only have to rent the tables and chairs. TIA!

Re: Renting a tent for outdoor party? WWYD?
My parents bought a huge tent for backyard parties (I don't know the size, sorry). They put it up for everything they have in the backyard. It's good for shade or to keep out of the rain.
This tent has paid for itself a hundred times over.
If you have the room to store it, like a garage or a shed, and if you plan on having things in the backyard every year, I say invest in the tents.

Think of how many parties and events you will have, potentially renting a tent. If you can store the two tents, I say go for it.
My mom has two big tents, not sure how big they are, but they make the rounds for the family. I use them differently for each event, be it for guests, food, etc.

We have been looking into buying a tent as well for quite some time .....
Just from what I learned along the way, its super important to make sure its not only water resistant, but water"proof"...Some are made more for shade as opposed to rain...
The ones we are looking at are in the $1k range but as PP's said, once you have it it will pay for itself

Amazon
This is very similar to the one I was looking at. The one I saw is on ebay, and it is a BIT cheaper...$79.99 + $20 for shipping, so it comes out to about $25 less but is made of the same material.
Thanks everybody for your input, I think I'll buy them. I'm also buying a 10x10 to cover the food area.
