Love 'em, want 'em. I'm just not sure on how to take care of them so they don't get ruined. Rachael Ray's always looks like it is in good condition, so there has to be a way to "keep" them.

I like the look-- if I couldn't get a stone, this would be the route I went. I assume there is some kind of finish so it's not the same as a cutting board?

Re: What are your thoughts on butcherblock countertops?
I like the look, especially with a country-ish theme, but I wonder about cleaning the wood...is it sealed in some way?
would stains/smells/germs seep into the wood?

Re: What are your thoughts on butcherblock countertops?
Love the look, but as others have said, I would be concerned about porousness of the material (being able to sterilize it, clean off smells and stains, etc.) and durability.

Re: What are your thoughts on butcherblock countertops?
I'm torn. I am not a country look lover and thats what I think of. I also think it depends on the color cabinets you put them on.

Re: What are your thoughts on butcherblock countertops?
I wouldn't do the entire kitchen in butcher block.. I'd do an island though..
any cuts or scratches and the whole cleanliness issue would bother me..

Re: What are your thoughts on butcherblock countertops?
i have them and LOVE them. As long as they are sealed every few months, which takes like 10 minutes to do.....they are no problem. I wipe them down like regular counters using clorox or fantastic, I cut on them, I have spilled grape juice on them, gotten tomato sauce on them. They are fine and super durable.
Also, if you do stain or nick them (which in 5 years I havent), you can just do a quick spot sanding.

Yup, the counters for the whole kitchen cost $500; the cabinest are from Ikea, we installed them ourselves, and the total cost was about $6k. Tile from home depot, installed ourselves, for another $1k or so.
In total, the whole kitchen cost us $10k

Re: What are your thoughts on butcherblock countertops?
I love butcher block, I actaully had it in this house when I bought, but the old owners left the breakfast bar mauve. So we changed to granite and I now have 2- 4" slabs of butcher block in my garage. I wish one of you lived down in FL, I would sell it cheap.

This, I think they would be hard to maintain but I've never had them so not too sure....

Re: What are your thoughts on butcherblock countertops?
I love butcher block, but if I were gonna re-do the kitchen, I'd get some kind of stone or concrete and have one or two inserts on the stone for butcher block boards that could be removed and cleaned easily.
Something like this but with the BB extended out to the edge of the countertop and also slightly raised above the counter.

It's really not so bad... we have to coat it with oil once every few months to make sure it doesn't dry out. If anything gets stained, we just sand it down a little, and re-oil. I really love them, though I'm sad to say in our new house we're going to do granite instead because we've done two renovations thus far with butcherblock, and we're now in the mood to venture to something new.
ETA - and, butcherblock is SUBSTANTIALLY cheaper than some of the other options, like granite

Re: What are your thoughts on butcherblock countertops?
we have them and love the way they look but have trouble with water damage in the area around the sink. it's finished wood, but water still seeps in as the lacquer breaks down over time, and it's starting to rot at the base of the faucet.
