Most bedding sets come with the bumpers. However, if you buy separates is cheaper and you won't have the bumper. I was thinking about doing that.

Re: Information on crib bumpers

You really don't need the bumpers or the blanket that come in those expensive sets. I NEVER used the blanket for DD, but I did use the bumpers for a little while. They didn't fit right in our crib, so I removed them eventually. What a waste of $150 (from PBK, thank god it was a shower gift!)

My friend gave me her set from her DS for our current baby to be, but I think I'll give it all back.

Re: Information on crib bumpers

Not for nothing, but I would never put a 7 week old baby in a crib-- that is why bassinets are sold and also why it is much safer to keep them in the room with you for the first few months. I put my DD in the crib when she was 4 months old and able to roll over both ways. I used regular bumpers, but she was old enough to roll away from them if she had trouble breathing. Maybe this isn't possible for some people, but it is ideal. The breathable bumpers are fine for when they are still little and can't stand up yet and bounce around in the crib, but when they do, they will get hurt ALOT! I even know someone whose son fell in his crib and ended up cracking open his skull and now has a metal plate in his head and constant headaches and screams all of the time in pain from loud noise.

This is so tragic. I guess if you ar enot using a bassinet the bestthing to do is get breathable bumpers. Then if you wish change to teh regular ones when they are strong enough to move away on their own. I pray for all of our children.

My husband and I put our Chat Icon Chat Icon nursery together last night. My husband put all the bedding on the crib and had mentioned to me that he had heard that the bumpers weren't good for the safety of the babies. I didn't know where he heard that from. Thank you for posting the article!

Re: Information on crib bumpers

why was a 7 week old put face down to sleep anyway? I'd imagine the baby could have suffocated on a mattress or ANYTHING if it was face down...not just the bumper.

ETA: i don't understand the concept of breathable bumpers...isn't the point of the bumper to pad the baby from hurting himself should he bump or fall onto the hardwood of the crib. how would a breathable bumper prevent that? its too flimsy. I feel like we're damned if we do and damned if we don't ya know?

Unfortunately there are so many "potential hazards" with baby products. From strollers, to car seats, to cribs, to toys, to bath tubs, blankets, bumpers, etc. Most items are safe if used correctly. You have to be comfortable with a product and decide what you want to do.

Re: Information on crib bumpers

i found baby movement monitors online that clip to the baby's diaper and detect the slightest movement (ie: chest movement from breathing) and will sound after 20 seconds of non movement.

Sorry.. but I don't agree with you at all about the "never putting a 7 week od baby in a crib". It is perfectly safe to do that.....and just because a baby is in the room with you does not mean you will know if something is wrong.

I also disagree about the breathable bumpers being unsafe when they can stand up. There is no need to freak out moms-to-be that dont have the option of keeping the baby in their room from the beginning.

Just because you have bumpers, breathabe or regular, in a crib, does NOT mean a kid still can fall and hit thier head....

I was just about to post. A crib is perfectly safe for ANY age baby with teh proper precautions. Heck, some people feel that the bassinets are SIDS risks! (I used one for 3 months and I could see why they would say that!)

The breathable bumpers keep babies from getting their arms stuck in the crib. Honestly, I don't think ANYTHING is needed. My DD has hit her head, gotten her arm stuck -- and she is fine, no big deal. I use the breathable bumpers so she can't see us LOL

ANd as for putting a baby face down -- that was the recommendation when we were growing up. . . so if the baby spit up, they would not choke on it. The information out there is always evolving and changing and we have to do what we feel is right for our babies Chat Icon

My baby will be going into the crib day one WITH breathable bumpers. It is perfectly fine to do so.

Re: Information on crib bumpers

I have 3 kids and am pg with #4 and used regular bumpers for the 1st until I walked in his room and saw his face pressed up against a corner with the bumper almost smoothering him. Never used them again. The breathable bumpers are the best because the baby cant see the outside of the crib and when they start moving it helps keep legs and arms in the crib.

Re: Information on crib bumpers

This has been in baby bargains for years, and not trying to start drama, but I have used them from day 1. DD would not have been able to sleep without that since she's a restless sleeper..we had them out of her crib one night bc they weren't dry from being cleaned and was up all night bc she was banging herself against the slats of the crib....Everyone does what they're comfortable with. I never used the blankets but plan on using the bumpers for the next DD as well....

I agree with Jen and Tilde. Crib is safe from day one as long as there is nothing in it and you put the baby on the back to sleep.

Breathable bumpers are helpful to keep limbs in the cribs. pacis in the crib, etc. I've never heard of a baby getting hurt because they didn't have padded bumpers-at least not to the extent of death as is the case with suffocation or SIDs.

Everyone should do what they are comfortable with, but to me the risk of a padded bumper was not worth it.

Re: Information on crib bumpers

Everyone has a different opinion on a lot of things ........

I personally don't see how using bumpers in the crib is any more 'dangerous than putting a baby IN BED with you ..........but co sleeping is SO widely accepted, I think THAT is seriously just asking for trouble. 2 huge people to possibly roll over onto baby, sheets, blankets, pillows, big fulffy matterss ......I don't know, seems a hell of a lot worse than some puffy fabric tied to the sides of the crib - But that's me.

My son went into his crib, with his bumpers the day we brought him home from the hospital. - He was a belly sleeper from the minute he could roll him self over and once he could do that, his favorite spot to sleep was pushed up into the corner of the crib, face down ..........

What was I going to do? Stand over that crib all night and repeatedly flip him back over ?

He's perfectly fine.

This next guy will also go into his crib, from day one, with the bumpers attached securely.

My son was in the crib from day 1 and so will this baby. Both have breathable bumpers in their cribs. It's absolutely safe to have newborns in the crib. They are safety rated for that exact purpose.

I'm very sorry to read about your friend's child who was injured in the crib, but that is not a typical experience. My son is a jumping machine, he runs from corner to corner of his crib and has never been hurt.....and has never had real bumpers in his crib.
