Does anyone feel overwhelmed with $$$$

I was just looking at our registry and noticing the prices of the big items.

I'm not expecting people to buy those items. I figure we will be purchasing the bulk of those things... and we were just looking at prices and YIKES!! I'm praying we do good on taxes (we are going to get them done in a week).

Anyone else???

YES!!!!! We are super lucky in that many of of big ticket items were purchased from our registry (I didn't think they would be either), but just thinking about the cost of diapers and other baby items stresses me out!

Re: Does anyone feel overwhelmed with $$$$

Honestly, not really. Only because I feel like with babies, people are just so different. These aren't items that you WANT these are items that you NEED. You'd be surprised at how generous people become and how the big items are the FIRST things to come off the registry.

Just about all my friends have felt the same way before their showers, and then were shocked to see how family & friends went and got the big ticket items so quick.

My shower is not for a month, and we've had family on both sides, almost fighting over who gets to buy what. Chat Icon I was kind of shocked by it, in a pleasant way of course.

Our infant car seat, convertible car seat and bouncer have been bought. Heck, our PNP is one of the more expensive items, and it's been bought twice!

It just seems that people become so generous when it comes to babies, because they know what new parents need as much help as possible in the beginning. It's not like a bridal shower where you just want that kitchen aid $300 stand mixer...family knows that you need the bassinet/PNP/stroller, etc.

Try not to stress too much about it until after your shower!

Re: Does anyone feel overwhelmed with $$$$

Everytime we walk into a baby store my DH says that he feels like his wallet is goign to throw up.
Its true all the stuff u need for a baby add up!! BIG TIME.
I figure though we cut spending elsewhere and start getting baby stuff a little at a time.

I am, we traditionally dont have showers, but I am breaking tradition and having one. I am nervous about getting the big items, my parents bought the furniture. Between the stuff we need and daycare I am totally stressed out. My DH has to get a second job.Chat Icon Chat Icon

I agree! I got everything I needed off of my registry! I was shocked at how generous people were. I worried about this too before my shower. But I don't need to purchase anything myself; only diapers!!!!

Re: Does anyone feel overwhelmed with $$$$

When I had DS#1 I was so overwhelmed by people's generosity... before and after the baby was born. We really got everything we needed and so many gift cards to fill in the gaps. It was ages before we had to use our own money for diapers and I ended up buying formula at BRU at he beginning because of the giftcards we got. I am sure you will be pleasantly surprised.Chat Icon

YES. I think the baby market is a racket. I can't get over how $$$ carseats are, not to mention strollers. I have no expectation people will buy me the stroller I want because it's almost $700 - I don't NEED a $700 stroller, but it's the one I want so if they don't get it for me I'll get it for myself.

I agree people tend to be very generous, but it doesn't mean some of this stuff doesn't seem crazy $$$

Yes! Our most expensive item was the stroller followed by the crib. Everything else was reasonable.

Re: Does anyone feel overwhelmed with $$$$

it's nice that people are more generous because it's for the baby.

I just don't have the family situation that would yield that type of generosity. IDK how else to put that... but really what I'm saying is... I sincerely do not expect to receive a lot of the big ticket items, at all. I'm pretty positive the big items won't be coming from my side of the family at all. I didn't think it before my brother's gf shower was a week after mine... and I CERTAINLY don't think it now that her shower is right after my shower.

DH family will definitely be more generous than my family. BUT they are also the ones throwing me the shower (I didn't think I was even going to have a shower)... and that in and of itself is so generous and I didn't expect that at all; so I'm really not expecting too much more from them. I feel like that's more of my gift. I think my MIL is buying the crib so I know that's one less large item to buy... but there's still so many more.

I really think the bulk of the large items will fall on us and the prices are insane!! So it freaks me out. I'm also on unemployment now... so that just adds to the monetary stress.

I'm not surrounded by people who can afford to buy things with these price tags for themselves, let alone someone else.

The stroller, carseat, furniture, etc prices of everything are really insane!!!

Aww Kerri. It will work out. Whatever you don't get at your shower you can just decide if its something you really need or want. My BIL had a baby at 18 and they only got a crib, pack n play, clothes and car seat/stroller combo. And almost 2 years later everything is still fine.

i would comparison shop and look online when you are ready to buy stuff yourself. I just ordered my stroller online and I saved $130. Pretty significant, though I don't want to rave until I get it and it's intact and normal!

but i feel the same that a lot of the big stuff will fall on us, so I'm trying to either borrow some of the littler things and check online for better deals and coupons.

Re: Does anyone feel overwhelmed with $$$$

Don't feel too overwhelmed, if you don't get many things at your shower, take a look at what you will really need early on, everything else you can buy little by little as you feel the need for it.

The baby really only needs a carseat, a stroller, a place to sleep, clothes, diapers and food. Everything else you can really do without if you had to.

Wishing you all the best and many many baby goodies Chat Icon

PS....I was shocked/surprised by my friends, co-workers and students generosity -- lots of people love buying baby things and you might just get tons of giftcards!!
