Re: Would you buy a house...
i don't think i would. our house is on a busy-ish street... not terrible, no double yellow,no lines at all, but I often wish we were down the one of the side streets next to us. Totally livable and tolerable for us, but I think a double yellow would be too much. Could you get in and out of the driveway easily? Would kids be save playing there? Is it a noisy street? if those things are ok,then maybe!
It kills me how they build such nice houses on streets like that... but I guess that is how they get houses sold in those areas.

Re: Would you buy a house...
Maybe, if it had off street parking, and if I couldn't hear the traffic from inside, and if it had a quiet backyard for hanging out, AND if I planned to live there forever.

Re: Would you buy a house...
Never. That was our top no way. I have a 2 year old who is a runner. Plus, you have to think of resale, would anyone with kids really prefer to be on a double yellow, probably not.

Re: Would you buy a house...
depends
some hilly areas just have the yellow line b/c of limited sight distance over hills, not necessarily busy

Re: Would you buy a house...
Probably not. When we were looking, originally it didn't matter to me. Then we went to see a house on Bellmore Avenue and it was way too busy for me. This may sound weird, but I want my kids to be able to play in the street like I did when I was a kid. We ended up buying on a somewhat busy street (the only way in and out of our development), but the street directly across from my house (think T shaped) is very quiet.

Re: Would you buy a house...
not if it was a busy road. it would make me too nervous with kids, also grew up on a busier road always a pain getting out of the driveway!!

Re: Would you buy a house...
no
I grew up on a nice quiet (relatively for a Queens/suburb) close-knit block with block parties. I want a similar experience for my kiddies!

Re: Would you buy a house...
Honestly no. Noise aside, I would be too afraid for my kids or dogs to live on a busy street. This was actually one of the first things on our "Do not want" list.

Re: Would you buy a house...
It's obviously personal preference & lots of people live on double yellows..We considered a few when we were looking last year & I have to say I am SOOO glad we didn't go with either of those houses. We were sad to walk away & it felt like we'd never find another, but a couple months later we found another house (that is not on a busy street) that we liked way better. Never would have found it if we settled and went with one of the others. When we drive by the others, we are thankful we didn't settle & buy on a double yellow.
Good luck!!

Re: Would you buy a house...
The "great deal" is a red flag. You need to find why a house is a great deal.
I don't want a busy street. I want to be in my backyard and enjoy "silence" (well, all concidering in Nassau!) and being able to get off my driveway and close my eyes and pray I won't get hit. I have a young child and 2 dogs. I don't want to be scared that I have a full speed road is in front of my house. I always think about those you live on a "main street". How they come in and out of their driveways.

Re: Would you buy a house...
We are currently living with my in laws, and they just bought their new house last year and it is on a double line road. VERY busy. VERY wide, which is good, but VERY busy. Esp in the morning and during rush hour. It leads from Garden City into West Hempstead to get to the Southern State and is a major cut through.
The house is gorgeous. And truthfully, you don't even hear the noise after a while. They dont have any young children, so it is fine for them.
I personally wouldn't want to buy a house on a busy street like that simply because I am paranoid about a child or dog running into it. But it is totally a personal preference because I am a nervous nelly...

Re: Would you buy a house...
It would depend on how set back the house is from the street, how big is the driveway, speed limit on road, off street parking, size of backyard

Thanks everyone. DH and I are butting heads on this issue. My only reservation about this house is the double yellow Otherwise its perfect for our needs.
We have small children and I am totally paranoid about this...
I have a big feeling that the great deal is because of the doube yellow line. The house has been sitting on the market for a while and its just absolutely beautiful.
Deep down inside I feel like if this was the perfect house for us we would just know it right away with no hesitations.
Myabe its not the one for us...
Well listen, if it makes you feel any better, I grew up on a house that was pretty much right on Austin Blvd in Island Park and spent alot of time at my grandmother's house that was literally right on Ocean Ave. in East Rockaway. both are very busy streets and we were just taught to be careful so if this house really is something you guys can see yourselves in for the long run, then go for it BUT you need to think about resale value as well because buyers will have the same exact reservations as you are right now.
Just my $0.02

Re: Would you buy a house...
I'm torn. If everything else was perfect, I think I would do it. I asked my husband about this recently, and he said he definitely would. He grew up on a very busy/major street (double lined) in Queens, so he doesnt see it as a big deal.

Yes. But check out how busy it is. I live on a street with a double yellow line but it's not very busy at all...

Re: Would you buy a house...
No for us. We line on a quiet street (you only drive on it if you line on it or are lost) and I still freak out when the kids run near the street
