Maternity Leave

Are you waiting until your manager confronts you about maternity leave, or will you tell your boss when you know how long you are taking?

How many months before you go out should you wait to tell if you already know how much time you want to take?

Re: Maternity Leave

I have already spoke to HR regarding what I am entitled to - what is expected of me, etc.

I will be meeting with management in the month prior to my due date to discuss what the plan is, who will cover for me, and when I anticipate being back in the office, and what my schedule will consist of.

I am due in June

Re: Maternity Leave

i talked to my Benefits dept about the usual procedure for maternity leave. they told me to come back in June and they'll give me all the paperwork that needs to be signed off by my dr. at that time, i'll know when my last day of work will be so i'll talk to my boss about it then too.

Re: Maternity Leave

I told them I plan to take 12 weeks the same day I told them I was pregnant. I wanted to be upfront about it.

Re: Maternity Leave

i don't know anyone at my firm that hasn't taken the full 12 weeks, so i think they just assume that's what im doing. either way it will be addressed in the coming months.

Re: Maternity Leave

I plan to take the full amount of paid time but not the unpaid time. I assume thats what they think I am doing but it hasn't really come up yet. I may contact firm-wide HR once I am further along but HR didnt ask when I told her

Re: Maternity Leave

As soon as I told my boss I was pregnant, I told him I planned to take FMLA leave of 12 weeks. I wanted them to have something prepared to cover for me since my office is small I didn't want all the work to land on one person.

Re: Maternity Leave

i think i spoke with my boss a week or so after i told him i was pregnant. i wanted a combo of paid leave and extra time unpaid so i wanted to ask as soon as possible so they could plan for me being out longer than usual.

Re: Maternity Leave

i didn't talk to him right away about it. but because of what i do I'm going to have to plan for backups while i'm out, so I went to his office one day at the end of feb and said, I just want to let you know my current thinking about maternity leave: I'm due 7/21 and plan to come back to work November 1st. If I have to, I might start working from home sooner than my due date b/c of the commute. I told him in April/May I'd come up with a project plan and backups for each of my client. he was cool with that.

I would be upfront with it sooner rather than later, especially since you are due in July like me.

Re: Maternity Leave

I am due in 3.5 weeks and submitted the paperwork to HR today. I told my boss when I was 20 weeks along so she's known for awhile.
