thinking about adding a deck to the back of our house, we're doing work to our 2nd floor and a deck is not in the drawings....since we'll obviously have an inspection for a new certificate of occupancy once the 2nd floor is done I don't want to complicate things if you DO in fact need to show a deck on a CofO. Otherwise I'll just stick with my plans for a new gazebo (since mine was blown away with the lovely winter we had....and since DH never listened to me when I told him to take it down!! Chat Icon

pretty sure you do. I had a convo with my mom about this fairly recently.

I believe you need a CO for a deck if its more than 18" off the ground.

ok it would definitely be more than 18" off the ground since our 1st floor is about 14 steps up....UGH....of course I'm saving money by not even having to contemplate doing a deck but if I spend $500 on a patio gazebo (I'm spreeing for the 12x12 instead of the 10x10 one we had that blew away), I just hope it doesn't get ruined by another storm, the canopy cover will definitely be taken down early this year!! I just hate spending the $$ on it if we wind up doing a deck later on at some point....our backyard is way too sunny not to have it and living in Howard Beach is definitely mosquito hell in summer time lol
