new mommy questions for btdt moms

DD is 5 weeks old. When will she do more than eat sleep and poop?
When can we "play" w her?
@ this age what can we do to entertain her when she is awake besides singing?

She only wants to sleep on us now- the swing and bouncy aren't doing their magic. What can we do?

TIA

My DS is now 3 1/2 months...and he started to play with us more at about 6 or 7 weeks I believe? I'm not too sure, not like it was that long ago but my memory is shot!
I would say that your little DD will be playing with you very soon!!

My DD is 9 weeks old and I think it was around 6 wks that she started to get into her play mats. With every week that passed, she got even more into it-now she hits the toys that hang down and sometimes even grabs them. She also "talks" to them. Chat Icon

Re: new mommy questions for btdt moms

yeah, pretty much! lol I felt like every week (as the pp said) they were doing something new..

I would start to slowly get her into either a pnp or something to stop her from the habit of sleeping on you..

I know it's all Chat Icon now but it does get old after a while when you are trying to get things done and it'll benefit you all in the long run. Chat Icon

Re: new mommy questions for btdt moms

Thanks ladies!

For the past week or so she'll only sleep in the pnp if she's really conked out! If not, as soon as we put her down she's hysterical.

Nights are really hard... When can we start sleep training?

Depends on what you mean by sleep training. Do you have any books.. I used 'healthy sleep habits happy baby" there's also the "no cry sleep solution"

however no one will recommend cry it out until at least 6 months..

It will get easier!!!Chat Icon

Re: new mommy questions for btdt moms

She breaks out of the swaddle now and she's too tiny for the miracle blanket.

It seems like she has her days and nights confused- we want to correct that when it's the appropriate time to do so.

there are ways to get her to start getting them right..

I started tricking my kids.. keeping them up more during the day rather than having them nap so much... keeping the curtains open during the day..

at night, no eye contact, keep their room dark, just feed them and rock them for a bit and put them to bed so they know it's not playtime..

Re: new mommy questions for btdt moms

I loved AJ sleeping on me.
We spent HOURS upon HOURS like that. I personally never cared. My house could fall down as long as she and I were safe and she was cuddled on me, my lap, my chest, my shoulder, whatever Chat Icon Yep I'm a loon.

I'd say 8weeks for sure she was more interactive but those first few months I was always holding her, cuddling her, letting her hear music, my voice, talking to her, showing her things, taking her out for walks, I'd recap her day to her as if she could understand and respond but chose not to. Yep I'm a nut job. Id talk to her forever. I even once told my hubby "yeah so I was telling AJ yesterday that we would take her to the park this weekend so we should, I don't want to let her down"

I never owned a PNP, no space
She wasn't into tummy time really but we'd talk while she was on me on her tummy.

I do love having Melia sleep on me all day and I'm doing pretty much what Veronica did.
I would just like to sleep when she sleeps @ night! Lol

I loved DD sleeping on me when she was a newborn too. She is 8.5 mos now and I wish she would sit still for 2 seconds and lay on me - so enjoy every moment while you can!

Wake her during the day - do not let her sleep all day. Do you BF or FF? If FF - wake and feed her every 4 hours to eat. This way she will give you her longer stretches of sleep at night. I consider that somewhat sleep training at that young age...waking them during the day to eat. A lot of people will tell you "never wake a sleeping baby" - they are also the people who have babies who are up in the night to eat. My DD STTN at 6 weeks a good 7-8 hours at a stretch and by 3 mos was sleeping 12 hours straight.
It will get better I promise.
Use a sound machine at night when she sleeps, swaddle her tight - you can use the miracle blanket even if she is too small...fold the top part down a bit to make it smaller. Wrap her really tight.
What does she sleep in? A bassinet? Do you have the Fisher Price Newborn Rock N Play sleeper? If not - invest in the $50 and get one - DD was so comfy and slept in that every night for her first 3-4 mos of life.

At 5 weeks my DD was not doing much yet either in terms of play - give it time. She will start to like the bouncy and things like that soon enough!

Good luck and hang in there!

Re: new mommy questions for btdt moms

I think you can do things now to eliminate day/night confusion - lots of light during the day, keep her awake a bit if you can, talk to her when you're doing diaper changes, keep the house loud (music on, cleaning) - don't try to stay quiet when she's napping, just do your regular thing. And at night, keep it dark and quiet, even when she wakes up. I tried to keep things as different as possible for my DD - so we'd swaddle at night and that's when I put her in the crib - and during the day, I'd put her down in the swing, the bouncy, on me - anywhere but the crib in the beginning - and during the day, she was never swaddled. We always had lots of light and noise, etc. too. Good luck! Chat Icon

Thank you!
DD is bottle fed- formula and pumped breast milk- she's not a giid latcher and I don't make enough to bf like I had originally planned.
She sleeps in the bassinet of a pnp or the swing or the bouncy. We want to transition her to her crib at 3-4 months.
I'll chech out the sleeper. We'll try anything to get her to sleep @ night and not on us.
