It will last until you have to start pushing--you need to feel your contractions in order to push!

Re: i keep reading posts about the epi wearing off...
Mine slipped out during my first labor and during my 3rd labor. During my 3rd labor they even reinserted it at 9cm. I have never had it wear off, just slip out of place. Also they never had to turn down the epi so I could push.

Re: i keep reading posts about the epi wearing off...
Mine only worked for about 45 minutes and then it wore off. I kept telling the nurse and the anasthesiologist checked it twice and said it was fine so I really don't have any clue what happened. It was def in wrong because my right thigh was the only thing that was numb and I didn't get the feeling back for 24 hours. IT sucked!

Re: i keep reading posts about the epi wearing off...
With both of mine, it lasted the entire time....I felt the need to push, the pressure and everything, and knew when I was having rectal pressure and when to push, but never felt the pain.
Some people have pumps...but I didn't...at least I dont think I did

Re: i keep reading posts about the epi wearing off...
With DD, it never wore off. It was great-I could feel pressure so I knew when to push but didn't feel any pain. I also got the controller so I was able to give myself a couple extra hits before it was time to push.
With DS it wore off, they reinserted it and I still had a lot of hot spots that I felt pain.
I think it really matters how good your the dr who puts it in is.

Not necessarily true!
I had such a strong epi that they turned it down...but i never felt a THING..not even pressure....they told me to try pushing and they would tell me when i was doing it right...i worked fine!! I never felt one pang during johnnys birth..it was insane! He came out in 5 minutes of pushing...
I do remember the doctor saying i was pushing incorrectly the first time i tried and that i needed to push from the stomach and not from my head if that makes sense...the blood vessels in your eyes can get very strained by pushing the wrong way. As soon as he said that, i began doing it right and all went great...

Ok wait...
With the epi are you guys saying they stick the needle in you and keep it in there? They don't just inject a drug in you and that's it? You have a needle in you the whole time?

i got confused too...i thought it was just a shot but i looked it up today and i think they put a catheder (sp?) in there after the numbing needle and then it gets taped to your back? i think thats what the site i read said

Its a continuous flow. A little tube stays inserted into ur back. Youtube has a video, but I warn you.....if you dont like needles, dont watch it!
They turn my epi off at the end so I could push, since I took forever with my first. Much easier pushing with feeling down there, then with none. 3 sets and he was out.

I don't think this is true. Once I felt pressure and the huge urge to poop I was told I was ready to push. I never felt contractions once I had the epi. Just the constant pressure. I didn't even feel the stitches being done. Just a pulling feeling but no pain at all.

okay that is a lot less scary! Do they tape it down really good so it doesn't really move?

Yes, they keep it put really well. I was turning and tossing, and slid down the bed when it was time to push, they never checked it once. Once you get it tho, u cant get out of bed.

Re: i keep reading posts about the epi wearing off...
Mine lasted until after the babies were out both times.
I did feel the 'ring of fire' the first time, but the second time she was out so fast I felt nothing.
