UPDATE I'm home and wanted to say THANK YOU!

SCROLL DOWN FOR UPDATE AND MORE PICS

Hi Ladies! It's been a longggg 6 days and I wanted to say THANK YOU ALL SO VERY VERY MUCH for all the sincere thoughts and prayers for Oliver and I. I strongly believe that it is your prayers that are helping me through this tough time and helping Ollie get stronger every day! Here's the complete story for those of you who want to know....

Satuday morning (at 30weeks 5 days pregnant) at 3:15AM I woke up and had to pee. I went to the bathroom and got back into bed. I felt a small leak and thought I had just leaked some urine Chat Icon I got out of bed and went to change my underwear and all of a sudden had a gush of fluid. I knew right away that my water had broke because I continued to gush for what seemed like 3-4 minutes and I couldn't control it no matter how hard I tried. I also smelled it Chat Icon and it was sweet like I had read amniotic fluid would be. My poor DH looked like a dear in the headlights. We rushed to Winthrop where the nurses were trying to assure me that I probably "peed myself", but I knew otherwise.

I was hooked up to a fetal monitor, blood taken, placed on IV fluids and examined where the resident confirmed that I had indeed broken my water. They did an ultrasound to check how much residual fluid I had left (not much) and to see how Ollie was doing (appeared o.k. and measuring close to 4 pounds). I was apparently having contractions that I wasn't aware of. They admitted me and started me on steroid injections to try to develop his lungs. They also started me on a medication to stop contractions, but wouldn't keep me on it longer than 48 hours. They wanted me to hold off long enough for the steroids to take effect but not keep him in there too long if there was a reason he needed to come out (which they never quite found).

Saturday and Sunday were tough because it was a big waiting game of praying the contractions held off (which thank God they did). We didn't sleep much because they were constantly poking and prodding me and Ollie hated the fetal monitor so he shifted position every 30 minutes so the nurses were constantly in my room.

Those first two days I saw more doctors that I can count...doctors from my practice, doctors from Winthrop, high risk doctors, neonatologist...they were all very informative , but went over every possible outcome (some of which were rather frightening)

Monday morning they stopped the procardia (med to stop my contractions). By 7:30AM I was having contractions again (only this time I could feel them). They tapered off over the late morning and afternoon. Around 5:30PM they were back and much stronger and happening about every 10-30 minutes. By 9PM they were every 8 minutes. At that point I was only 1cm dilated but EXTREMELY uncomfortable. They gave me some sort of sedative which was the most amazing thing in the world...I passed out for 2 hours which was the most sleep I had had in 3 days. However, when I woke up my contractions were every 2 minutes Chat Icon and more painful that anything I've ever felt before! At that point I was 3cm and they paged the anesthesiologist for an epidural. I have no idea how women labor without an epidural because it SUCKS and I wanted to die. After receiving the epidural, things got much better.

The actual delivery/pushing part isn't so bad. I only pushed for 30 minutes and Oliver Joseph was born at 4:56AM and was 3lbs 10oz and 16 and 1/2 inches long. He screamed when he came out which was quite possibly the greatest noise I've every heard!f I knew his lungs couldn't be that bad if he could yell that loud. The neonatologist grabbed him right away, assessed him, let me kiss him and wisked him away to the NICU. I did tear very slightly but didn't feel it (but did feel the suturing...ouch). At that point I was so exhausted that I passed out for 3 hours.

When I woke up, after eating and using the bathroom, I got to see him. He was really tiny and wrinkly and had a huge bruise covering the majority of his head from sitting so low in my pelvis for so long without fluid. He was on IV fluids, antibiotics and a CPAP which helped to keep his lungs fully inflated even though he was breathing room air. He had a heart murmur which they said could be normal for preemies and would hopefully go away in 2 days. He was also placed on phototherapy for jaundice.

Ollie has proved to be a fighter and all the nurses refer to him as fiesty. He is no longer on the CPAP and only receiving a small amount of oxygen through a nasal cannula. His heart murmur is gone. He is no longer on phototherapy. They started feeding him through a nasogastric tube yesterday (because he is too young to suckle and breathe at that same time) and his food intake was increased today. The nurses and doctors say he is doing wonderful and really strong and big for his age. I'm pumping for him which is going well so far.

I was discharged from the hospital today at 4PM. That was the first time I broke down. It was so hard leaving the hospital and going home without my son. I know that he is where he needs to be and they are amazing there and doing everything in the world to make him a stronger and healthier baby, but it's still hard.

I can not say enough about all the staff at Winthrop. They have the most amazing doctors and nurses. I don't know if I could have made it through labor without one nurse in particular who was supposed to leave at 3AM but stayed with my until 6AM.

Girls delivering at Winthrop...you have nothing to worry about...you are in great hands. Oh and as a side note I was solo in my room until this morning...they really do try to keep 1 person per room, but they had an abnormally high delivery rate this week.

If you've made it through all of this, thanks for reading. More importantly, thanks for all your prayers. You are all extremely special ladies and you'll never know how much your words mean to me. Please continue to pray for Ollie. I'll post a couple pics for your guys.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Finally...a special thank you to Matilde for keeping everyone posted and her prayers! Thank you Tilde!

UPDATE: Just wanted to give you ladies an Ollie update and say Thank You again for your continual prayers and words of encouragement. Ollie is 4 days old today and getting stronger and healthier with each passing day. They pulled his nasal cannula today as he keeps ripping it out of his nose and is breathing wonderfully without it. All the nurses refer to him as the feisty one Chat Icon The are still feeding him through a nasogastric tube which they will have to do until he reaches at least 33 (possibly 34) weeks, but they have increased his feedings every day. My milk is in and I feel like a dairy cowChat Icon He is still receiving phototherapy for his jaundice and they are going to recheck his levels tomorrow. The nurse today stuck him in my sweatshirt and he slept like that for an hour....it was the most amazing feeling ever. I promise to keep you ladies posted...you have all helped me through this more than you'll ever know Chat Icon I'm attaching some pics of him from last night. I hope you are all feeling well.

Congratulations!!!! What a story, so glad that you and your baby are doing well. I am sure that you hear stories like this from everyone, but my husband was born at 29 weeks and I was born at 32 weeks! And we are both totally 100% fine, no long term health complications. They are right, preemies are fighters and super strong. I'll keep praying that your little one will be home with you guys ASAP!
