Re: Older child pacifier weaning HELPPPPP

OK I think I have the oldest child to ever use a paci - she is 4 and still uses it for nightime! I am mortified but she does not want to give it up. Last weekend we made a huge deal about the paci fairy coming to take them ot the new babies. We decorated a bag and put all the pacis in there, then DH took it to the mailbox and she "mailed" it to her. And we promised her a huge toy. She was so gung-ho about it and then got into bed and was hysterical. I couldn't do it - and finally caved. Such a mistake and i totally blame myself for letting this go on for so long. The dentist said to get rid of it by 4 for her teeth and I just can't bear to hear her scream. So if anything, this should make you feel better that DC is only 3! Chat Icon

have you REALLY played up the "fairy"?

Umm, I've played her up so much that I'm pretty sure Ryan sleeps with one eye open in fear of some stranger coming to his room at night and taking his most prized possession. We initial tried to mail the binkys to her ummm last Easter!! She is known in this house Chat Icon

Unfortunately it's us more than them. You have to stick to your guns, be strong and let them cry it out. By giving it back after a huge hysterical episode is letting them know they win.

DD was about 3 1/2 when we weaned... we decided to do it when we took her to dentist who said her bite was open b/c of them (it has now since closed- amazing stuff).

DD had been wanting a specific American Girl doll- we told her the Tooth Fairy would come and take them and she would probably get that very special gift if she put all her binky's under her pillow.

We talked it up for about a week.

When I had the doll we had DD make and decorate an envelope. She colored it, etc. She had me write a letter to the tooth fairy.

Then we, together, went around the house and found all the pacifiers and put them in the envelope.

That night they went under the pillow and she woke up to a doll.

That week she would cry a little- saying she wanted to give the doll back, etc etc- but after about a week she was done.

I know - I was OK with letting him have a fit. But once he started potentially hurting himself with the tantrum, I gave in Chat Icon

This morning he told me he would give them up when he is 4 Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
