Pre-natal vitamins and Vitamin A
Hope everyone is doing well! I hate to be the worry wort that I am, but I guess my fatherly instincts are already taking over. My wife's pre-natal doesnt have vitamin A and because my wife has been battling morning sickness for much of her 1st trimester she hasnt actually been getting much vitamin A from her diet, being that she has only been eating a very bland diet and almost no veggies or vitamin A rich foods. Basically, the only Vitamin A she has been consuming is from the 2 glasses of milk per day that she has been drinking. Then today while at Barnes and Noble I'm reading all of these Pregnancy books about how important Vitamin A is in the development of the baby's brain, eyes, skin, etc. Yikes! Then I think to myself if Vitamin A is this important to the baby then how come its not included with our prenatal. Neither is zinc! This is a prescription pre-natal called PNV- DHA softgell. Can you tell me if your pre-natals have Vitamin A and zinc? I guess they assume that you are going to get enough of these nutrients from your food, but its been nearly impossible with my wife's morning sickness. I guess she should start to eat a pound of carrots everyday until further notice. : ) Then ofcourse there's the danger of too much Vitamin A, toxicity and birth defects. You start to get paranoid and worry about everything! Too much of this, not enough of that! I guess there's no perfect pregnancy. Can you tell that I'm losing my mind? And to think its only going to get worse! lol. Can someone she some light on Vitamin A and pre-natals. Is Vitamin A most important in the 1st trimester or the 2nd and 3rd trimesters. Sorry for rambling on like this. I need a drink!

Re: Pre-natal vitamins and Vitamin A
Thanks MrsH2009! Unfortunately, according to babycenter, Vitamin A is critical in the embryonic stage, but we're currently in the fetus stage. My wife is 11.5 weeks pregnant and I guess all we can do is make sure she is getting adequate levels of Vitamin A from this point forward. Her morning sickness has greatly improved so she'll be able to eat better. I just wish we had realized the importance of Vitamin A earlier and my wife could have been taking a Vitamin A supplement. I knew the big ones were Folic acid, calcium and iron. I can kick myself. I feel I let the baby down.

Re: Pre-natal vitamins and Vitamin A
Does her vitamin list Beta Carotene as an ingredient, b/c I read that is the form of vitamin A in a lot of prenatals.
Don't beat yourself up about it. Im sure whatever vit A your wife did consume was given straight to the baby, since the body makes sure the baby's nutritional needs are met before its own. If you're that concerned, def mention it to her Dr.

Re: Pre-natal vitamins and Vitamin A
Her prenatal doesnt have Beta Carotene. As you said, the baby will draw nutrients from my wife's reserves. I just read where the liver can store up to a 2 year supply of Vitamin A so I'd like to think the baby's need for this vitamin has been satisfied up to now.
