Can I make a recommendation?
After having two kids, I can say that the thing that helped my kids sleep the best was, by far, the sound machine. Not something that plays lullabyes... something that makes LOUD white noise.
I got this one:
HoMedics SoundSpa Portable Sound Machine
I put it on the loudest volume on the waterfall setting.
When babies are in the womb, all they hear are REALLY loud whooshing noises all day and all night long - that's why some pediatricians will recommend running the vacuum to calm a fussy baby. Quiet and gentle noises just don't have the same effect on little tiny babies most of the time.
Obviously, this isn't going to work for all kids, but it worked for my two so I thought I would share if I can save at least one new mother some grief and help their baby sleep!

ITA! Both boys have a sound machine and it works wonders to drown out the outside noise.

I couldn't agree more!!
We have one for DS that I love. Unfortunately they don't make it anymore so we got the one you posted, LB.
I swear it drowns out every other noise imaginable and is the best invention ever!

Neither of my kids could sleep and still can't without white noise. I wish I would have known about that machine though!

I have the same one (and a backup just in case it breaks waiting in a drawer or for the new baby soon). I have homedics sound macines in both my sons rooms and it has been a positive experience with me too!!!!!!! I love this one - it is so small and lightweight - it comes on vacations with us too!

That might be true for some but both of my kids can sleep fine without it (sometimes sitters forget to put it on at night, etc). We use it now that they are older so we don't have to be quiet at night  since we are all on one floor.

I downloaded some white noise loops to my iPod and I agree, it was great. She doesn't use it anymore - we just stopped one day and there were no issues with sleep.

LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS!!!
I bought two of these - one for each of my kids' rooms due to inconsiderate neighbors with loud barking dogs.
Ever since I bought them, my kids sleep soundly through the night without waking.
LOVE them!!!!!!

I bought mine at either Linens and Things or Bed Bath and Beyond (can't remember which one) almost a year ago.
