um omg you're NOT overreacting AT ALL

I would have taken her aside and told her to never do that again. that if she has a problem to talk to you about it first and you can handle it the way YOU see fit.

wow that would have made me go insane.

Sounds b!itchy to me! Maybe at pickup you can say, "next time you can pull me aside if you want to talk about anything like that..."

I agree.

I would have a word with the director. I don't like her attitude. No one talks to my kid like that.

I would without doubt say something to her. She was unprofessional. IMO, every kid at some point has some difficulty adjusting to one thing or another, will she speak to all the kids/parents like that?Chat Icon

As a former daycare teacher (in the 3 year old room for that matter) this got to me. First of all, she should not have announced it like that and should have been professional enough to pull you aside and approach it in a completely different way. Second of all, the fact that she repeated over and over "he won't do it" is obnoxious. That is her job as the teacher to create a classroom environment that encourages him to sit for things like circle time. That's her JOB. I had kids that sometimes wouldn't sit for circle time but my assistant and I worked with them and were ALWAYS positive. They're three. You have to work with them on sitting for group activities. It comes with the territory.

Sorry to go off, but as someone who has worked in early childhood 5+ years and loves it, this got to me. If it were my child I would speak to the director. Sorry you had to deal with that!

ITA! She is way out of line and the director needs to know it!

out of line and unprofessional -

I'm sorry, but when your CHOSEN job is being in a room w/ 3 year olds all day - you better damn well be able to handle NORMAL 3 year old behaviors !!!

I wouldn't even give her another chance...go over her head to the director. I learned form experience (my kids were in daycare for 4 years) and I am of the teaching profession...what she did was inappropriate. Like others have said....sitting in a circle is a SKILL in of itself! It does not come easy for some children and has to be properly modeled and reinforced...there must be a behavior mod in place. Sounds to me the teacher is very inexperienced....does she even have a teaching background? regardless....there is way to go about this and she went about it the wrong way. You pay good money for your child to go there and DESERVE better treatment....stand up for yourself and ADVOCATE for your child by going to the director. I had to do this a number of times my self, and I always got the outcome I desired! Good luck!!!!

oh that would have made me furious! I'd say something at pick-up to her. Tell her that if she has something to say to your abut your son, going forward she should take you to the side to talk.
if it continues, i'd speak to the director.

Re: B!tchy comment, or I'm overreacting?? (Daycare related)

Totally NOT overreacting IMO! That is so SO inappropriate and unprofessional!! That would have made my blood boil!! And I completely agree with you about needing to be a little more understanding with him since he JUST started in that room and is so young! Of course he needs a few weeks or so to get acclimated with the rules and routines of the 3 year old room. And yea, it might take a little bit longer since he is only there 2 days, but TOO BAD!! That's their job to take the time with him and be patient and help him get to that point. Uggh!! I'm getting infuriated for you as I'm writing this!!! I would absolutely say something to her next time you see her, and if it is not well received, go right over her to the director. If you do say something, please report back and let us know what happens!! So sorry you're dealing with that! Chat Icon

Re: B!tchy comment, or I'm overreacting?? (Daycare related)

As both a teacher and a parent I am outraged by this. Her behavior is unacceptable and unprofessional, and I would talk to both her and the director about it. I would not tolerate my child being treated like that. As a teacher, we all have bad days, and are not always 100% - but that is just wrong. I would want to know how she speaks to the kids the rest of the day.

I don't think I would like that at all!

is that the norm? to use collective shame as a behavior inducing technique?Chat Icon

ITA. I'm pretty easy going but I would NOT be okay with the teacher publicly humiliating my child like that. She should have pulled you aside and spoken to you about it.

Well I hate to say it but that teacher is probably not a trained teacher at all. Why not ask what her credentials are cause you will probably find that she is not qualified to teach which is not unusual at a daycare. The entire thing sounds inappropriate...I mean having to sit at circle time for all those kids to do a show and tell...that is ridiculous. Its a nice idea but to force the issue is just sad that the teacher does not know better. ANd focusing so much on letters....there are more important things for a three year old to learn...but the teacher sounds clueless! You were right, it is appropriate for each child to learn the letters in their name...that is appropriate curriculum for a three yr old...not the whole alphabet.

I am going to shut up now cause I could go on and on about this....

Totally b****y i dont think that you are over reacting at all. That would have Ticked me off. I would have said well then we will see how good a teacher you really are then if you get him to do it. Definitely talk to the director. she is very unprofessional to do that to your Ds. i understand sometimes getting frustrated but you still dont act that way.

I am a preschool teacher and I can tell you that this is just wrong. She definitely should have approached you on the side instead of announcing it to everyone. Also, I think it is crazy that she is making such a huge deal out of it since he just was moved into that room. I would either say something or maybe give it a little longer and see if she continues to handle things this way. Good luck Chat Icon
