Oil deliveries don't have us by the nuts anymore!

In the last 6 weeks we have spent $1,575 on oil...CRAZY! Our house os 2,000 square feet and is never warmer than 62 degrees, we had enough. We just converted and installed a pellet stove and the difference is amazing, very warm and costs $4 a day in pellets. We should have done this months ago.
No more crazy oil deliveries!

Not at all, we have it kiddie cornered in our living room. We had someone from the company come look at our house and told us 2 good spots where it would be most efficient and then we ordered.

We have a wood burning stove and even wood can get pricey but it works great warming the house. Im curious if I can use pellets. Where do you get them??

I live in Maine so we got it from a local heating store. They have wood stoves, pellet stoves and other options as well. Im not sure if you can use pellets in a woodstove or not, we had to get a specific pellet stove, you can get pellets anywhere, we get them from Lowe's/Home Depot or that same store we bought the stove from. We load the stove in the morning and the pellets last all day long. They are very inexpensive, especially compared to oil, we have saved a lot.

Would you say that the pellets are inexpensive compared to buying firewood?

Yes, cords of wood are more expensive than pellets. At least around here anyway.

Im pretty sure the pellets are compact fuel pellets made of wood and paper waste. So it recyecled. DH is big on recycling so he thought this was was best option for us and cost wise it was the way to go.

Sounds great. We just moved in and it gets chilly in this house. I hope to get the chimney cleaned and functional soon so we can use the fireplace. I'm open to other ways of heating so I'm going to look into this.

Re: Oil deliveries don't have us by the nuts anymore!

Best investment we ever made.
A fireplace sucks warm air out of the house and up the chimney and produces very little heat.
They are extremely inefficient.
We convereted ours to a pellet stove and have not used any oil to heat our home since.
And the house is always TOASTY warm. Warmer than we ever could keep it with oil.
We only use oil for hot water now.
It's amazing!

Not only cheaper, but much cleaner- no stinky smell, and 100X more efficient.
You would never get your house as warm by burning a fire in a fireplace.
They are nice to look at maybe, but that's about it.

Just be sure to vent a pellet stove carefully to the outdoors and to buy quality pellets from a stove company that guarantees quality pellets as there have been problems with badly manufactured pellets.

I did something different to get free of oil, I switched to a geothermal system last winter after our old oil furnace died. Our house has never been so cosy and we saved over $4000 in heating oil costs between January and April last year. It has air conditioning as well and it even preheats our hot water with its excess heat. Thanks to the stimulus package I got to take 30% of its cost off my taxes as a credit and LIPA gave me $1000 back for converting to all electric. LIPA also dropped our electric rate for the heating season, though not for the summer air conditioning season.

This year we added solar panels so our LIPA bills have dropped even more Chat Icon
