Symptoms of GD??

Are there any??

I have been beyond exhausted, getting dizzy, excessive thirst, and just plain old lethargic... I am 26 weeks now... and I just can't get enough sleep or water! And (TMI) my urine has a bit of a funky smell.. I gained a lot at my last visit.. went from only being up 4 lbs at 20 weeks, to being up 14 at 24 weeks... which means i gained 10 lbs in 4 weeks! It doesnt seem to add up to me... I am going for my GD test in 2 weeks, but wanted to know if anyone had any symptoms previous to their 1 hr...

When I had my daughter, I didnt have it.. but I didnt feel like this either (That I can remember)

Re: Symptoms of GD??

I had similar symptoms and was worried about passing. . except for the weight gain in the order, I gained a lot more earlier then tapered off but I did have ridiculous thirst, dizziness, especially if I did have sugar and I ended passing my 1 hr with no problem. I also think my pee sometimes smelled funny but I think it has to do with switching my prenatals. .

I think most people don't have symptoms of GD. . I think i had mentioned something to my doc once about being worried and she told me to relax and stop reading things on the internet Chat Icon

I had GD and had no symptoms at all. It was a complete shock when I failed my 1 hour.

Re: Symptoms of GD??

As a diabetic of about 26 years (but obviously never had GD... Chat Icon Chat Icon ), I can tell you that you don't feel most of the symptoms of high blood sugar until it is significantly elevated. Under 200, I usually don't feel much, and I am very in tune with how each level feels. *I* can tell if it's high, but under 200, but I don't think that most people could. You don't start feeling thirsty, lethargic, etc until over 250 or so (at least *I* don't). I would imagine everyone is different, but probably relatively similar.

If you're hovering around 150 most of the time, you have diabetes, but you'll most likely never feel it.

The symptoms you are describing are definitely symptoms of high blood sugar (except for the weight gain. Usually undiagnosed diabetics lose weight, since the body can't use any of the sugar that you're eating, so you body is actually "starving", even though you have too much sugar in your blood)

If you know someone with a glucometer, it takes literally about 5 seconds to see what your sugar level is. That will give you a pretty good idea if you have GD or not.

This is really good advice. It's a lot easier for most people to detect low blood sugar than high blood sugar (unless, of course, you've been living with diabetes for a significant amount of time). Let your doctor know how you've been feeling, but the symptoms you have could just be PG related and not specifically GD related!

Re: Symptoms of GD??

I had GD and was completely suprised with my 1st pregnancy. I didn't have any warning signs that I knew of and didn't fit any higher risk categories. I was nauseous almost the entire pregnancy and my only pregnancy that was like that. The dr did say maybe the GD could have been the cause but not for sure. I know a friend who swore she had GD based on similar signs that you have and she failed her 1 hour and passed the 3 hour with no issues and didn't have GD but she was convinced she did.

Those can be symptoms but the only way to know for sure if the glucose test. I was diagnosed with GD at 27 weeks and didn't have a single symptom so I guess it's different for everyone. Good luck with the glucose test. If you end up with GD I know it will seem miserable at first but really it was quite manageable and I survived it..........even with having to take insulin shots 4X/day. Chat Icon

I was diagnosed with GD and was in complete shock. I had gained a total of 9 pounds the entire first 6.5 months of my pregnancy and felt great. I am a healthy eater and in pretty good shape. The GD diagnosis came out of nowhere! Chat Icon
