agreed!! Take out the chapters of the places you are going. Take them to kinkos & have them bound! best.idea.ever b/c then you aren't lugging a tour book with you. We couldn't live without Rick on our trip to Europe

I would definitely go in October! Last time I was there (in '08) we went in September. But I have been there in October.
If you're doing Rome and south I would definitely go to Sorrento and other towns in the Sorrentine peninsula. Absolutely beautiful. You can also stop off at Naples first before going further south to Sorrento.
Once in Sorrento, you can do the Amalfi Coast Drive - the views are absolutely spectacular. And you can take a ferry/hydrofoil to Capri for a day trip. DH and I had an amazing, amazing time in Sorrento. We can't wait to go back.
Also, I'm not sure how far south you are going but if you have plans to go to Sicily, Catania and Taormina are wonderful.
Enjoy!!

Re: Vacation in Italy! What is...
I went in February and we lucked out weatherwise - it was low to mid 50s during the day and clear the entire time. I've heard July and August are the busiest and hottest times to go. Naples/Pompeii are definite must sees. You can actually stay in Rome and take a day or overnight trip to Naples. Not too long of a drive.

Re: Vacation in Italy! What is...
you're going to italy!! how exciting! did you only go to rome when you were with your grandparents?
you said you are only going south, but i've only been north. i was going to say venice and florence b/c they are beautiful! and venice might not be around much longer. naples is also supposed to be beautiful.
my friend's sister went there in october last year for her HM and i think it was perfect weather. a little cool, but better than walking around in 100 degrees+ like we did in august!
if you are up for a tour, look into globus tours. my friend used them and we were about to, until they canceled our tour!

I am not 100% sold on just going south but when I went we went from Rome/Naples north so I wanted to try something different this time, especially since a lot of DH's family is from Sicily. I definitely don't need summer weather but I don't want to be freezing either LOL, that's why I was hoping October would be a good time to go.
Thank you so much everyone!!!

Re: Vacation in Italy! What is...
absolutely do the amalfi coast. when i went we did rome and took a train to naples / sorrento and then went up the coast. we stayed in Praiano, which is a little less touristy than Positano and Amalfi, but they are all gorgeous.
sigh. I wish I could go back!!

Re: Vacation in Italy! What is...
My favorite time to go is late spring/early summer...perfect weather.
I am personally not a fan of the bigger touristy cities.
LOVE the Liguria region - Italian Riveria Cinque Terre, Portovenere, Sestri etc.
Tuscany is also beautiful - San Gimignano, Lucca, Montepulciano.
The Piemonte region is also gorgeous - in the foothills of the Alps. My cousins live here and I just when I visit them.

Re: Vacation in Italy! What is...
October is awesome to go. it's our favorite time of the year. the weather is still good, its much cheaper than the high season, and less tourists to worry about (plus, it's soccer season...though you may not care so much about that lol)
for your first time, I would say to hit up Rome, Florence, and Venice.
if you are feeling adventurous, rent a car when you leave Rome.
there are other places that after having been to ITaly many times I love, but these 3 are the biggies.
I think Venice is an absolute must.
I love the area south of Rome...going to the Amalfi and Capri. but we took first timers there with us in May of '09 and while they loved it. they would have liked to see Venice and Florence first from what they told me.
although it only means they will be going back at some point.
I also wouldn't recommend, as much as I love it, Milan on a first trip. it's not really the Italy people expect, as awesome as it is.

Re: Vacation in Italy! What is...
We went to Venice in Oct '09 and the weather was great. Sunny, 70-75 every day.
I haven't been to any other place in Italy yet but I would recommend Venice. I'm in love with the city. We spent 5 days there, which was more than enough tourist-wise but we were able to relax and enjoy the sights and sounds.

Re: Vacation in Italy! What is...
October is a wonderful time of the year!
We went this past summer & it my DH;s first time ( I have off then, no option, I would prefer Fall).
IMO must see's are Rome, Venice, Florence (and surronding towns Siena, San gimignano). Cinque Terra is an amazing seaside place made up of 5 villages--great hiking, seafood simply amazing.
But if you are going south from Rome I would say Amalfi Coast or Sicily- I am partial to flying to Taormina, Sicily
Honestly you can't go wrong. The only places I would not recommend are Pisa and Milan, neither did anything for me.
HAVE FUN!
