Re: Ethnic names - how do you feel about them?
Ethnic names are definately great. Most of my very close friends are Greek. Some are OTB (off the boat), others first and second generation. Their families have been so good with passing their language and heritage from generation to generation. It is a beautiful thing. My friends do have ethnic names and many do use "americanized"nicknames but they still use their real name. Some of my friends are named Aristoteles=Teli, Haralambos=Bobby, Demetrius=Jimmy, Gerasimo=Jerry, Evangelia=Eve, Eleni=Helen. They go back in forth with the names depending on whether they are in a professional setting or with family. MOst of them are names after immediate family. IMHO it is a beautiful thing to carry on tradition and honor your heritage. (and if it's not YOUR heritage you are honoring, that's ok too!) I'd rather take another culture's name than a clebrity name (ex: Apple)

Posted by SHOPAHOLIC I feel the opposite. I think names that are not as popular in this country but are well known or popular names where we come from are beautiful. It makes the child stand out but not in a strange celebrity made up name kind of way. At least thats what I think
I completely agree with you!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That nurse is an A-hole
You and your DH name your LO whatever you guys both love!
And for the record, most "traditional" or "classic" baby names seem to be the minority these days anyway...

I have always loved them. When talking to a nurse at my OB's office the other day she made it seem like it was the worst thing ever. She kept saying this is America and we should pick names that our children wont be tortured over. Names that can be easily read/pronounced by most people. She is like " Your first generation not off the boat....."

ITA! My DD has an ethnic name that is not pronounced the way it is spelled and you know what, people learn it and it's fine. for the next baby i am a little conflicted though... the ethnic name i LOVE is nothing like the way it's pronounced, but i think I will do it anyway. ;)
i say go with what you want. pick a name that is meaningful for you
