Star- I'm so confused
the old owners star is still on my home (purchased march 2010)
I live in suffolk
how do I apply for it?
when is the deadline?
what do I need? Currently I don't have my deed

I live in Nassau and we needed a copy of our deed. Why don't you have the deed?

I didn't get it at closing. our terrible attorney said he would send it to us. I just realized he never sent me anything so I have tried to contact him to get it, but he was such a jerk thru the entire process I think I might have a really hard time getting it

There is a form on the town of islip website. All you need is address and the property location (section, lot block#) from your tax bill.
I don't know how to put a link in a post, but the form # is RP-425 Star Application, Basic & Enhanced.

ok so I printed the form but it doesn't say I need the deed. but its my first time applying, wouldn't I need it?

You don't need the deed. Just fill out the info and mail it in ASAP. The deadline is 12/31! Just FYI your taxes will go up for the next school year. You are currenly filing for the 2011/2012 school year.

You can go pick up a deed at the county offices in riverhead, took 5 minutes and $5 to get it. You just need to bring your tax bill.

Here is the phone number for the assessor's office in the Town of Brookhaven. It's the info number listed on their website for basic star application questions.
STAR Exemption – Basic (631) 451-9051
Brookhaven's deadline is March 1 (every town has a diff. deadline).
Brookhaven Assessor's Office Website
We applied for it before we had all our paperwork from the closing and the Town still took our application and then we provided them with the additional materials once they arrived.
Here are some instructions from the form. I would recommend you just go to Town Hall and apply in person. It's easy and then you have piece of mind that the form was received.
In addition to the completed application, the Town of Brookhaven
requires you to submit PHOTOCOPIES of the following:
Submit
Photocopies of: 1. If you purchased your home within the last two months, we need
to see proof of ownership which is one of the following:
“Deed” for a house/condominium OR
“Bill of Sale” for properties in Greenwood Village OR
“Certificate of Shares” for Co-op to prove ownership.
(Note: if the ownership is in a “Trust”, include a complete copy of the Trust)
2. And for every application, we need one of the following showing
the current address as proof of residency:
Driver’s License OR
Non-driver I.D. OR
Voter’s Registration Card OR
Car Registration
If you have not yet changed your driver’s license, you can write the new address in the space provided on the back and photocopy both front & back of the license.

We did not need Deed...in Suffolk too.
