Spinoff to Christmas Lights Houses
Is anyone not terribly impressed with a lot of these super done homes?
I kind of don't get it to be honest... especially the ones with 500 blowups crammed onto a postage stamp sized front yard.
I prefer really simple, tasteful decorations - I like when a home has a tree wrapped in light and some Christmas lights framing the home - and a tree peeking through the window. I find when it's a LOT more than that it can seem a little garish..
I don't mind when it's a light DISPLAY (like Camp Edie or the light show at Jones Beach).. but it seems too much on someones house.
Am I the only one who feels like this?

Not a fan of the ones with too much stuff but there is a house in Brooklyn that we go to ( sort of by Kings Plaza - but in a ritzy neighborhood forget what the area is called ) that has a life sized nativity display enclosed in glass, a huge Santa coming out of a hot air baloon and a Peanuts display. No blow ups, not too many lights - just these beautiful figures. It is my favorite Christmas house

I agree! I feel like those blow ups are taking over more and more of the small yards. I think one or two is fine, but why 80? You can't even look at all of them then.

Re: Spinoff to Christmas Lights Houses
I agree.
I loved the done up house from when I was a kid-the ones with lots of lights, maybe a Christmas scene setup in the garage. Some cool animated stuff.
The blowsup and a bunch of random things thrown on a yard don't convey a consistent "theme"-it seems chaotic.
That's just my take.
What I really love is lights that outline the entire house, lights on all the trees and bushes. And the lights have to be the same kind-all color or all clear and the same size bulbs.
I like all clear lights framing the entire house/windows and wreaths in each window.

I think the house you're talking about is in Mill Basin. They have some gorgeous homes and they go all out for Christmas.
Generally, I think less is more. But I do expect overdone/over the top decorations in some neighborhoods around me and I actually LOVE it. It has become somewhat of a tradition.

Re: Spinoff to Christmas Lights Houses
i agree! there's a beautiful house by me that has their entire house (windows and all) outlined in big white lights and it looks beautiful! and then our neighbor has like 10 blow ups and it just looks dumb. i really don't get the whole blow up craze...they're tacky, i hate them!
eta: there's this house on tulip ave in franklin square (right across from tulip deli) that's all decked out in different colored lights and they have ALL of them constantly flashing on and off... it looks horrible!

I live in Brooklyn, Dyker Heights area. Kings Plaza is not in Dyker Heights. The ritzy area by Kings Plaza is most likely Bergen Beach. Some of the houses in Dyker Heights are nice some of them I do not like at all. I also personally do not like the blow up things that some people stick a million of onto their front lawn.

Re: Spinoff to Christmas Lights Houses
i like tasteful decor. I also am beginning to wonder how green it is to waste all that electricity on these mega houses. I mean now that we have our lights up (outside and the tree lights) we turn all the inside lights off or down at night to conserve unless we really need it. Its pretty to look at the lights and the glow that makes me happy.

Re: Spinoff to Christmas Lights Houses
It's not my taste and I would despise a neighbor with it if they had a Vegas thing going on. but driving by doesn't bother me. My kids get all excited over it, so that alone makes me like them a little more.

Re: Spinoff to Christmas Lights Houses
I think anything with lights is nice. No matter what it looks festive. Its the stupid blowups that take away from the decor. I mean ok one blowup and lights is nice...but nothing but blowups is not cute. Theres a few houses my DH and I that it looks like the blowup section of a store threw up on someones lawn.

I love Christmas, i love lights everywhere (i even have a string of white lights on my bathroom mirror ), i love, love houses that are done up. That being said, I don't really care for those blow ups, just not my thing.

Re: Spinoff to Christmas Lights Houses
I like when there are "sections" to the houses, and people group things appropriately and space them nicely. I don't like when a bunch of stuff is just randomly shoved anywhere at all.

Re: Spinoff to Christmas Lights Houses
Honestly I have never seen a Christmas display that has turned me off. There are plenty of things that I wouldn't do on my house (I'm not a fan of the blow up dolls) but I love seeing them on other houses.
We have neighbors who seem to compete with who can cram the most stuff on their lawn - each has a "theme" of sorts. The one guy has a bazillion of those white lighted deer and other woodland creatures and the next door neigbor has a bazillion blow up dolls. It cracks me up! We have another neighbor who has a ton of animated figures and plays Christmas music for hours every night, I think it is great!
Our house varies depending on how much time DH has that year or what mood strikes him, some years every bush, railing, surface is outlined and then years like this one, we have a simple lighted tree on the porch and that is it. One year I came home to find DH had done the bushes with solid strand lights in rainbow order. I called our house the "gay pride house" that year
Christmas lights make me happy no matter what, I like the light the somber and reserved greenery with white lights just as much as the wild crazy "let's see who can make the electricity dial spin fastest" houses.

Okay, I definitely frown upon blow up dolls as holiday lawn decoration

We have 3 blow ups (2 big and one small) on our lawn and a pig. The pig has nothing to do with Christmas, but I love pigs and it has a holly wreath around its neck. I love my lawn ornaments

Re: Spinoff to Christmas Lights Houses
I go by, less is def more. People around my area are blow up crazy. Santas, mickey, sleds, to much crap. We just framed our roof line. Plain and simple. The next day our neighbors went nuts with lights all over. Dh came home and was like, maybe we should put more up. No way.
