I don't have a fireplace or a staircase (the two places they were hung in the house I grew up in), and as of right now we only have one stocking - for the dog!!
That being said, I put a tiny hook under the windowsill that is next to the tree, and we hung it from there. If we ever get more stockings I imagine we'd continue to put them along that windowsill since it's in the living room near the tree and our other decor.

This is what we did growing up-my mom had hooks in the windo sill for them.
Now, I have a fireplace so they hang from the mantle.

Ours go over our fireplace. Growing up, my mom hung them off the wall unit. In my MIL's house she hung them on the walls where pictures hung the rest of the year.

We have ours (me and Vin) on the fireplace... but for our pups we put their special dog stocking holders on the window sill  they are perfect there! And it's right next to the tree. I didn't want the dogs up on the mantle with us and they have their own stockings and holders so it worked good. Charlotte and Reagan

I hang mine from the top of the window where the curtain rod is. It actually looks really nice.

May sound kinda weird... but I have no place for mine either really so i put them on the ends of our curtain rods!
I have the hooks to hold the curtains back on either side of the window and I hang ours there.
