Africa Safari
Anyone ever been on one? If yes? Did you use a tour group - which one?
Any tips as to the time of year to go?
Thanks!

Yes, went to South Africa November/December 2004. It was amazing, good weather too, not hot, just perfect. It was our HM so we did a luxury trip, but roughed it a bit as well. I highly recommend contacting Steve Bolnick, he was our private guide for Cape Town & The Winelands, he is an amazing man... Steve-SA

Re: Africa Safari
I have been on two African safaris and one African gorilla trek. We did a luxury tented camp (Serengeti Under Canvas) in Tanzania to see the migration and a luxury safari at a private reserve at Royal Malewane in South Africa. We also did a gorilla trek in Rwanda. We also did a tiger safari in India at the Oberoi Ranthambore but that isn't Africa! We combined these trips with other stops as well. Each time we went we went in January. The time of year depends on where in Africa you are going and the migration if you want to see that.
Feel free to ask me questions. All of my trips were private (just me and my husband). We hired private drivers, private guides, and chartered planes. I booked it using a special travel agent (Tricia Townsend Mitchell) who specializes in these types of luxury/complex trips.

Re: Africa Safari
PP is right. Either book with someone who completely specializes in this or go with a group.
You want to go in our Winter season. That's Summer in Africa and yes it depends where you want to go. I went twice in "our" Summer season and it's the rain season there. You won't see any animals like in the dry season.
I personally prefer groups. I feel safer that way but that's me.
I also suggest you go in a Country that you speak the language.
Most of them have local dialect/language but they usually either speak French or English.
I speak both and it's helpful.
