Re: Still trying to figure out this whole working mom thing
It was VERY VERY hard for the first month. I cried every night. I was rushing home like a mad woman. I couldnt' get to the bathroom fast enough to wash my hands and get her in my arms. I usually get home around 6:30 and she's asleep anytime between 7:00-8:00 so it doesn't give me much time. Usually in that time, I give her a bath, read her a book, play for a few minutes and give her her last bottle. I do absolutely nothing for myself, with the exception of taking off my work clothes and putting on some sweats. Once she's asleep I have time to talk to DH, have dinner, and get ready for the next day. It's tough and exhausting, but what else can I do. It's tough being a working mom for sure!

Re: Still trying to figure out this whole working mom thing
I know exactly what you are going through...it is so hard!
I just feel so guilty dropping my DD off and not picking her up until 6:00 pm.The day is soo long for me!! But I have to do it and have to live with it. When I get home I am rushing to cook, clean up, feed her, etc. By the time 8:00 pm rolls around I am so exhausted and so is she...I only have time to read to her, feed her once last time and she is in bed by 9:00-9:30...I feel like I don't spend the time that I want with her...I am so worried about getting dinner ready and getting ready for the next day..I just feel like she is growing up so fast and I am not enjoying her...it is sooo hard!!!!!!

Ok I am in the minority and probably wont be of ANY help to you but...
IT DID NOT GET EASIER FOR ME!!!
It actually getrs hard. I went back to work when DD was 3 months(part time let me add, only 2 days a week) and I still to this day cry and want to throw up EVERTIME I LEAVE! In the beginning it was for reasons liek you said...I hated missing her bottles...hated that...Now she is 16 months and I hate missing EVERYTHING.
But i am not normal!
Oh and to add my mom watches her who is the ABSOLUTE BEST and I still get torn to peices everytime I leave!
The only thing that has gotten me thru recently is i took a new job so I leave at 6am (and sually she is still asleep) and I am home by 2. So at least we still have the rest of the day...however the trade of is if do A LOT of work from home so now my attention at home has shifted away from her.... So for me, I cant win!
Hang in there!
You are not alone! It got hardier for me too. Now that DS is aware of me leaving and he puts his arms out for me to take him- it breaks my heart. He is in good care with either my MIL or Mom, but it still kills me to leave everyday.

Re: Still trying to figure out this whole working mom thing
it is SOOOOOOO HARD when they are that little.
hell, I came in late today b/c my man was in a hell of state so I nursed him to sleep before I left.
do yourself a favor..and make HER the priority while she is awake. just for these next few weeks. as she gets older, she will be up more and you can do more while she's awake and still enjoy her.
just not yet.
it will get better. but yes, for ME, personally, I feel that it is very unnatural for ME to walk out of my door every day when my life is waving goodbye.

It's not natural. I totally agree.
I love my profession... and spent my life getting where I am... but I know it'll hurt going back to work.

Re: Still trying to figure out this whole working mom thing
I know when I talk about her I feel alittle better...if that makes any sense at all!
We are all stuck at work...lets all talk about our DC...it always puts a smile on my face...might as well make the best of it!
I can start...(hey I need to do this for my sanity)..my DD is 4 months old and she is beginning to squeal and make all these noises...I can't wait for her to say her first words (like MaMa)

It's not easy - it's a constant struggle. I feel guilty I don't spend enough time w/ him, I feel overwhelmed from the second I step off that train and start my evening 'routine' .........
And I go to work b/c I want to - I can't imagine the struggle for the women who want to be SAHMs

Re: Still trying to figure out this whole working mom thing
I hate when people take a thread in an entirely new direction, so I apologize You work for the Fed gov't, right? I know Fed-wide there seems to be a push for work/life balance and I'm pretty sure that's why my boss approved my sweet p/t gig request. Maybe there are work from home options to consider? Our agency is just starting to do this on a wide-scale basis (took so long because we deal with sensitive data) and it seems like it could be ideal for you, esp since you have built-in care at work.
The OPM site might have more rah-rah cheerleading on this that you could show your boss that could help?

it gets easier on some level T....but it never feels 100% right to me...
I agree with this..it does get easier..but to me it feels so unnatural being away from my DS so much I feel like I am missing a lot and when I am with him on workdays I am always rushing...I'm really feeling the pressure now with him being an active toddler...wish I could do at least P/T

I hope no one takes offense to this but it is NOT natural to leave your infant every day -- the feeling in my heart really proves that every single day I go to work. It is like my body can't handle it
I am SO with you on this. I never would have guessed that about myself until I was pregnant, and until I had my first. it hurts. it literally hurts and rips my heart out. 2 years later, in all honesty, the pain is only worse
OMG! Finally someone who is like me! I agree it HURTS, does notget easier and I hate it!
Right there with you! I know my girls love their sitter's house and they are learning so much but I would give anything to be with them :( my youngest is 19 mos and I am still so upset about it.
to the op - You will fall into a routine where you can get everything done though and so will your little one.
Like a pp said, the weekends get to be even that much more special.

Re: Still trying to figure out this whole working mom thing
God it is NOT easy at all. i feel for you. it will get easier somehow or you will just get used to it so it will feel easier. i won't lie-i am 3 years into it and still cant figure it out. i get home at 3pm and still feel overwhelmed and that i don't have enough time with my kids! i will say it got harder once i had baby #2 though. i hate it-hate being a working mom for so many reasons even though i DO love my job. this has been the hardest thing ever. hang in there! and enjoy every and any moments you get with your child.

Let all those things wait until she's sleeping, you'll feel better about spending the extra time together and if something around the house doesn't get done?? Oh well....it'll still be there tomorrow
ITA with this! It isn't easy but it makes my time with him all the more sweeter!

Re: Still trying to figure out this whole working mom thing
I have always loved my job, loved my boss, and LOVED MY PAY! I went back to work when my DS was 9 weeks old. He is now 17 weeks, and it didnt get easier for me. I can see how you feel. I bit the bullet, and put notice in. It will be tough, I'll have to sacrifice some extra things, but in the end it was worth it. Some people just can't do both things.

Re: Still trying to figure out this whole working mom thing
ive been back at work for a year now and my heart still aches everyday having to leave DS. i have family that watches him and i call and text them numerous times a day for updates on what hes doing, eating, playing with, etc. i feel like im missing all the best parts because by the time i get to him at 5:30 all i do is cook, clean, give him a bath and then hes in bed by 7:30. i literally LIVE for weekends. i have no choice. it never gets easier unfortunately, you just get used to it.
