getting a fireplace installed?

we have a hi-ranch and would like to get a fireplace... in the 2nd story living room. dh was talking about a gas fireplace - bc we have gas heat so he imagined it would be easier, being we already have the gas lines. but i don't know anything about fireplaces... except how nice they look and have no idea about the process, the $$, or if installing on a 2nd floor would even be possible. does a fireplace "store" help you design one to your liking, or do you need a contracter? can anyone offer some insight/guidance? i don't know what our options would even be.

We used them. MY BILs got a discount because they own their own construction firm, but they are still pricey. Other companies have a similar look.

Re: getting a fireplace installed?

We are planning on putting a FP in our bedroom - when we were pricing it out, it didn't seem there would be an issue with it being on the 2nd floor.

For our LR fireplace - we used Basic Energy East - Huntington for the install and to purchase the FP - they were the least expensive for installation. The units themselves are pretty much the same across the board. It was about $5K total for the unit and install.

Then a plumber had to connect it to the gas line. I don't know how much that cost b/c we already had a plumber doing other work so I don't know how much he charged specifically for that.

Re: getting a fireplace installed?

we have a high ranch and we installed a direct vent gas fireplace in our upstairs living room

the direct vent ones can be installed in a cantealevor fashion - ie overhanging the exteriror wall - ours we built a foundation because our house is built into a hill

we got our fireplace from energy basics east in huntington - some fireplaces come with mantels

you will need a plumber to run the gas line to the fireplace

you can have a carpenter create the opening and mantle and then have the fireplace company install the fireplace

some fireplaces come with matnles and stone surrounds others don't so costs matter which you get and the look you want

we have an escape 36 dirct vent- we have stone around and had custom cabntery built around includign mantle, tv storage and closed storage - my dh wanted a fireplace that went tot he ground- but it made for an expensive fireplace

Re: getting a fireplace installed?

We have one. It is directly vented outside through the wall, right up against a wall. Could cost alot to have it fully installed and gas lines run. Ours was here when we bought but it cost about 7,000 to redo, get a new unit, granite, but use existing mantle and gas line. So I imagine fully installing a lower priced (but average) unit could be about 8000 (since our unit and granite were $$$).
