Re: Another Sposual Holiday Gift Exchange Question - Those with Joint Accounts

our money us our money. there is no separate sole accounts...

that being said.... recently we kinda stopped exchanging christmas gifts aside from a small gift since IL's get us plenty. .. when we did exchange we'd usually set a mutual amount like $100 or $150 that we'd each spend on the other. It was for stuff like jewelry, perfume I might not normally buy, etc.... we weren't buying each other everyday stuff. sometimes we'd say that we'd each pick out a board game. occasionally there would be a splurge like one year dh got me a huge vegas vacation trip.

one thing i never understood was people who had money in seperate accounts - who bought gifts for each other of gift cards- i thought isn't that kinda a washout?Chat Icon

That seems kinda silly. It like "Hey, see, I didn't totally forget about your b-day, I DID manage to stop by a store on the way home from work.... Chat Icon "

Which *is* slightly better than using cash and saying "Here's a 20, go buy yourself something nice....." Chat Icon Chat Icon

My main position in this is that we never really ask for things that we wouldn't be comfortable buying ourselves, so whether I click the Amazon order button or she does, it's not much of a difference.

You're right about it not mattering who 'clicks' the amazon button, but for us I will maybe buy him something he doesn't ask for, KWIM? Like something he mentioned in September and forgot about. For him, he likes to buy me clothes, (which I find hysterical, but that's for another post.) But he will go to the store and pick out an outfit or two and wrap them up. Can I go buy clothes myself? Sure, but he feels good about choosing a specific outfit that caught his eye.

we have joint accounts and joint credit cards (so we can save up all our miles/points in one place). we both put our money in the accounts so when he buys me a gift he is paying for it... both our money goes in and it OUR money. The onlt problem with out setup is it is hard for him to surprise me since i pay all the bills, on the other hand, I can totally surprise him tho!

Re: Another Sposual Holiday Gift Exchange Question - Those with Joint Accounts

We have a joint account where all our money comes (and goes).

We each have individual "slush" funds-we get to transfer a little money into these accounts for personal spending.

We do this so neither of us is touching the main accounts other than the auto movement, when your slush fund is dry-you are tapped. You can make any purchases out of your slush fund, no questions asked. However, if you want to dip back into the joint account, we chat first. We discuss all big purchases before making a move.

DH and I both save up in our slush fund for presents for each other.
