I am not sure about electricty but I know I have heard that using a dishwasher uses less water then washing dishes uses.

I was just going to say the same thing. Using the dishwasher uses way less water than washing the dishes by hand.
If I only have a couple of things to wash I will do it by hand, but if I have enough for a full load I'll just pop them in the dishwasher. Much easier!

Re: dishwasher vs washing dishes
Washing dishes by hand, on average, uses 16 gallons as opposed to 3-4 gallons used by a dishwasher for the same amount of dishes.
Edited for most new dishwashers require no pre-washing dishes. In fact, the washer works better if it has food residue on it.

Re: dishwasher vs washing dishes
I like using the dishwasher because everything comes out sterile. Even when I use super hot water, I never feel as though they are as clean with hand washing.

i dont care how much electric or water it costs. its saves me time and cuts out more bacteria then if i were to wash dishes myself.

Re: dishwasher vs washing dishes
I have an older dishwasher and don't prerinse and they always come out clean. I find the powder works better in my machine than liquid.

Re: dishwasher vs washing dishes
I do both. I don't put my pots and pans in the diswasher or my really sharp/expensive knives (most of these say not too anyway). I only use the dishwasher maybe once a week, but then again it's just me and DH.

Re: dishwasher vs washing dishes
I prefer dishwasher.... and I never really rinsed so well or even at all sometimes... haha.
the only thing with the dishwasher is DH puts EVERYTHING in it even dishes that are not dishwasher safe... so things can get ruined....

Re: dishwasher vs washing dishes
We don't rinse our dishes before hand. We just scrape off the big pieces of food and then put right into the dishwasher.

I was told it uses less energy to use the dishwasher as well.
- dishwasher uses less water - dishwasher does not use has much oil/gas to keep water hot running out of the faucet for long periods of time like in hand washing.

Re: dishwasher vs washing dishes
i want a dishwasher so bad it hurts. Ugh but dh doesn't want to take out a cabinet (original 1950s') just to put in a very small dishwasher and he doesn't want a portable one.

hahaha...I did exactly this last night! But here's the issue I typically have....it's just myself, DH and DD (she's 18mths). When I cook, I mainly have non-dishwasher friendly stuff - pots, knives and tons of freaking tauperware. I don't know why but that usually what I have. Anywho I'll only have like 2-3 plates and a little cutlery. I then feel it's not worth it to run the dishwasher for those when I have to wash pots and pans by hand anyway so I use my dishwasher for the most part as a drying rack. Now, does anyone haVe tips to share 'cos I feel cheated. KWIM.. I have a dishwasher but I hardly ever have enough for a full load.

Re: dishwasher vs washing dishes
I do not prerinse in my older dishwasher, but DH does (he was raised by a woman who uses her dishwasher to store food storage containers and thinks dishwashers are for the lazy ). DH is afraid the dishes won't come out as clean, but his mother's dishwasher is like when they first came out old.
I personally like dishwashers better b/c the water tempurature and steam make me feel my dishes are cleaner. JMO
