BREASTFEEDING: Mom's who used Medela Pumps

I am trying to decide between the

(a) Medela Freestyle or

(b) Pump in Style Advanced Metro Bag (its teh PISA with the removeable motor).

Any advice/suggestions?

TIA

100% the Freestyle!

It has a digital timer on it (no need to ever remember to look at a clock)

It comes with a hands free kit to connect it to the nursing bra you're already wearing (no need to hold it or get a handsfree nursing bra to put on each time you pump)

It's SMALL, you can put it in your baby bag, work bag, wherever

You charge the battery and then can use it until the battery dies - I usually only charge it once or twice a week and I pump 3 times a day or so (no need to be near a plug!)

Definitely worth it!

Thanks for responding. I originally was all set on the freestyle until at BBB rep told me you can't pump directly into the bags. Do you still use the same Medela bottles for the freestyle (I got those as a gift and wonder whether I should return them if I use the freestyle).

Also, what accessories did you get for the freestyle?

i love my freestyle

i just use the medala bottles to pump in

the freestyle comes with 4 which was fine for work but when i traveled overnight i needed more - i would just dump in a bag - i was usually doing too much to pump into a bag - but i am pretty sure they can attach

the only accessories - i got was extra pump parts so i did not have to wash at work - i had an extra cold pack too but that wasn't really necessary

Actually, I'm more a fan of the Lansinoh bags - they've held up great! A lot of people give the Lansinoh bags great reviews.

I pump into the medela 5 oz bottles that came with the pump and then pour into the lansinoh bag to freeze. Very easy!

I have the PISA but definitely recommend the Freestyle for all the reasons mentioned!

I had someone buy me the pump while I was still recovering at home and started using it before I realized it was the wrong one, but it does the job!

Yes, these bags IMO are the best, I freeze them flat and they take up so much less room Chat Icon

Agree about the Lansinoh bags- they are awesome. I also find their breastpads to be the best out there too.

Definitely get the Freestyle. I have a Freestyle and a PISA backpack. It's much more compact and hides in my regular handbag when I go out. I rarely pumped into bags. It's easier for me to pump into medela bottles and then ration out the milk into Lansinoh bags. I like how they freeze flat, but I've had an occasional bag tear when defrosting. I'd still stick with Lansinoh bags for freezing despite some of my defrosting issues.

Re: BREASTFEEDING: Mom's who used Medela Pumps

I used the PISA with my 2 DDs. With my third I insisted on getting a new pump and got the Freestyle.

OMG- what a difference. The handsfree option is truly hands free and you don't have to use a special bra, so that's a huge time saver. The rechargeable battery runs as though it's plugged in- something the PISA sucked at. I never used it on battery power- it always had to be plugged in or the suction just wasn't "right".

I pumped into the collection bottles and dumped in the Lansinoh bags. The Medela bags are crap and split very easily.

i had the freestyle and loved it.i actaully did use the bags even though your're not supposed to. there's a way to attach them.

when i got mine i got an extra set of parts too just in case somthing happened to them. note - the only place to get an extra tube is from medela directly, but everything else is available from target, bru or BBB.

I had the pump in style, which was good, but after learning about the freestyle, I think it would have been better

Re: BREASTFEEDING: Mom's who used Medela Pumps

100% the Freestyle!!! I borrowed my friends PISA for a few days in the beginning while I waited for my Freestyle to be shipped and there is such a huge difference! You will love the hands free feature and it's great that it's portable so you don't have to be near an outlet to pump. In emergencies I was even able to pump in my car while DH was driving Chat Icon
I would pump into the bottles and then transfer to the bags, no big deal at all. I don't think you need any other accessories personally unless you need different sized horns.
It is definitely worth the extra money!!!!
Oh and in case you don't already know, some insurance companies will cover the cost of the pump. I have Empire BC/BS and they covered it 100% as long as I used a durable medical provider (I used Edgepark.com at the suggestion of other LIF members and they were great).

I wish I would've known this before I bought mine, or I would've gotten the Freestyle. I bought the PISA.

So glad I posted this. I got the PISA as a gift - haven't opened it and am exchanging for the freestyle tomorrow. Thanks to all the BTDT moms - I am so glad to have LIF to guide me through this new experience.
