town of brookhaven- they don't recycle?
I just heard from someone else, that they actually don't recycle. and that the reason they ask us to separate is for the future when they can, we will already know how to do this
this is not meant to start any drama, but I was extremely upset by this. I never take any of our bottles back I just put them in the recycle bin thinking they were getting recycled 
Is this true? I can't find anything on the website

I don't think this is true. They are very limited in what they recycle - they will only recycle #1 and #2 plastic.
I don't think they would go through the expense of giving the curby cans and then hiring a contractor to collect recyclables 2 days a week if they didn't actually recycle.

so they actually go through and separate each plastic bottle and look for a #1 or #2? That sounds REALLY time consuming

Yes the do recycle. There is a huge recycling center in Yaphank. They have people that work there that seperate the bottles in to piles, to be recycled and those that can't.
I took a tour last year with my Girl Scouts and you would be surprised and the amount of waste we all make.
The bottles are crushed and sold to roadway companies that tar the roads. Some of the "un-recyclable" plastic is sold to companies that can break them down and reuse them

Wow. I was going to get really upset if they werent really recycling. because I recycle every piece of plastic and piece of glass I have..Same thing for the paper. Even my clothes tags, toilet paper rolls, milk cartons..old bills..I really try not to waste a thing. Sometimes my DH thinks I am nuts..but I feel like iam helping the planet.

thanks! we have an old round can that the previous owners left. I don't have a sticker on it and they still take the cans. And for our newspapers I just use a rubbermaid tote
I did get a letter when we first moved in that any given address can get a new can every 5 years for free.... maybe they changed it since March?

me too! i recycle everything that can be recycled. Its to the point where it annoys me, lol

yep and then they leave it at the curb. If I have a box I dump it all in the box, but I usually don't have one so the tote is perfect.

We got a warning letter a week after moving in bc we put some cardboard in the regular trash! We're always really good about it but for some reason we missed some pieces.
Just wanted to add that my mom read somewhere that it costs the town a LOT of money to seperate nonrecyclables that people mix in the wrong bin!
