PSA: pertussis vaccine

I heard how important it was for me and DH to get the pertussis vaccine, to protect DD. I get my flu shot every year, so I thought it was no big deal.

I know everyone is different, BUT I wanted to give you a heads up. I never had reaction to the flu shot or any other vaccine (that I can remember).

I got the pertussis vaccine on Thursday morning. Thursday I was fine. Yesterday I woke up with 102 fever, which continued to today. It goes down when I take Motrin but then shoots right back up once it wears off. I also have a large softball sized lump on my arm, it is bright red and VERY painful - I cannot pick anything up with that arm and it looks TERRIBLE.

I asked my doctor, and my friend who is a nurse - these are all very normal reactions to the vaccine. Just wanted to let you know so that you can plan accordingly if you decide to get it. For example, not the day before you have to wear an evening gown LOL AND don't get it in your dominant arm.

I am glad I got it, I got it to protect DD and DH is going to get it on Wednesday anyway (His first time to the doctor in over ten years!) but figured I could give you a heads up since it scared me at first!

My DD just got that vaccine and had a horrible reaction as well. vommit, hugh fever, loss of appetite, and tiredness.
My DS never got it and I dont think I would get it for him after that reaction.

Re: PSA: pertussis vaccine

The DTaP vaccine is the only one my DS has ever had a reaction too. Apparently the boosters have worse reactions than the initial vaccine.

Wow, crazy! DH got it when DS was about 2 or 3 months old and he didn't have that type of reaction at all! Yikes. I missed my appointment to get mine last week and have to reschedule. Will definitely get it in my left arm in case I get a similar reaction, thanks for the PSA.

Hope you feel better soon! I got the DTAP a couple of years ago when I burned my hand and needed a tetanus booster but I didn't have any reaction at all. I did get a flu shot on Thursday though and my arm is still sore! Chat Icon

Hailey had a bad reaction both times she had the DPT shot. Fever, sore leg and lump for like a month after!

I also had a reaction but not like yours. I had a very itchy red, bad rash on my back for a few days. Hope you feel better
