When do toddlers NEED to move out of a crib into a regular bed?
DD1 is 21 mths. I am in no rush to move her out of her crib, but I know I will have to somewhat soon--but how soon should I? I feel like she will just get up and walk around her room or cry at the door if she's not in her crib. She only sleeps in her crib, and almost always (9/10 times) cries for a few minutes when I leave her at night.

IMO there are a few reasons parents move toddlers to a big bed 1. baby can climb out of the crib, rendering it unsafe. 2. Mom is pregnant with another child and wants to use the crib for child number two. 3. Child is two big for the crib - wakes up because they are hitting their arms/legs into the rails. 4. The child is about 3+ years old and the parent feels its "time" for a bigger bed.

my DS will be 2 in a couple of weeks, there is no way he is ready for a bed ( I am def not!) he cries for a minute when I put him down. I know he will jump right out of his bed

That makes me feel better! There is no way my daughter would stay in bed right now. I feel like she never will! She has always always resisted bed time.

I used to say that too!
We moved DS out when he was just shy of 3 1/2 . He LOVED his crib and felt safe in there. Don't let anyone "pressure" you into thinking there is a deadline. Move her out when you and she are ready

DD loves her crib and has never tried to climb out. She loves sleeping in there and I think as someone said, "feels safe". I bought her a toddler bedding set so it's more like a bed for when we do transition but at 2 1/2, I still don't see moving her out of it anytime soon.

dd too..she was over three when she agreed to let us take off the side to make it a toddler bed .....i don't think she even realizes she could fit in a reg bed now, and she'll be 4 in three weeks!

my DD is 3 and still in a crib. she fits fine, is comfy, has never tried to climb out. she loves her crib and it still works for us for now. i am planning on getting her a bed over the winter when she is about 3.5. there is no rule about when to switch. you do it out of necessity or if the child is clmibing out. i figure no one is going to ask her when she went into a bed when she applies to college or her first job. its just something that is not a big deal to me and will happen eventually whether it's sooner than later.

DD turned 3 in June and she is perfectly happy sleeping in her crib. She is an awesome sleeper, so there's no rush.

whenever you feel comfortable moving them.
DS was moved out at 13 months for naps, 16/17 months for good
DD was in a bed at 8 months, but switches back and forth to her crib.
she will probably be in her crib for another few months before we take her crib apart (she is 13.5 months old)
i personally cant stand the crib.... i was hoping DD wouldnt have gone back to her crib, but it happened...
if your not comfortable moving them, then dont

I wouldn't move them out until there is a safety risk. My first stayed until her third birthday, my second is still there at 2.5.

DD is 20 mos and was thinking of switching her bc I'd like to have a 2nd soon and use that crib for that one..butttt she loooves her crib..so honestly not sure what I'm going to do

The only reason why DS moved into a bed at age 3 was because DD was ready for the crib. We didn't want to buy another crib.
DS LOVED his crib. Never tried to climb out and was comfy. He transitioned to his bed no problem right after his 3rd bday.
You do it when you want to.

My DD went into a bed two months before her 2nd birthday. It was earlier than we'd planned/wanted but I went in to see her sleeping and she just had so little room. She is tall for her age. If you can imagine a 6 foot tall man in a twin bed, that's *almost* how scrunched she looked in her crib.
ETA- She was also well into the habit of climbing out and even though she did it well we were still afraid she'd fall at some point.

Until they can climb out. My DD was climbing out at 18 mos and we had to converts her then. Knock on wood my 23 month old is going strong in his crib.

We just moved DS to a big boy bed, he will be 3 in 4 months. I would have kept him longer but he is tall for his age and it was time.
I say as long as they are sleeping well and not tring to get out, why mess with a good thing! I have friends whose kids are nearly 4 and still in a crib.
