Re: Opinions pls-taken back by dd check up today

I think she looks fine!

But at the same time, 24 mos seems like a great time for drs to discuss healthy habits with parents if their kids are higher on the weight percentile then in height.

I don't think any drastic changes have to be made, I took it as be on the lookout. Start good habits today to avoid later issues. i think a lot of peds are going to make this their message with so many obese people out there.

again, she is beautiful, i would take it as 2 years old, start good habits now.

mine is 3.5 years old
39 inches
33 lbs

he completely tapered off throughout the years.

My DS is a year old and probably is taller and weighs more!! At his 9 month appt. he was 28lbs and 31 inches!!! My doc slyly suggested a dietician. I just brushed it off. My son was born a month early at almost 9lbs. Sometimes drs don't look at the whole picture.
Your DD is gorgeous and perfect!!!!

That being said:I do watch what my DS eats and drinks. He does get juice, but it is soooooooooo watered down that it is really just to give the water a little taste so he will drink something.

My ped had the same talk with me for DS#2 at his 18 month visit. He was 32.5" 31.5# I told the ped, "but he's solid, he doesn't have the rolls like my nephew does, etc"

The ped was on the kind side and told me to look at his chart. it was 3.5 standard deviations above "normal" - which is about as far on the chart as you can go - only .1% would be heavier . That's obese. I think I needed him to show me that.

He gave us suggestions for food and we changed milk and juice at day care. Everyone told us that the ped was wrong and that he was fine.

The next weight check he was the same percentile, but they were happy b/c it levelled off and said "Could you imagine his weight if we hadn't made the changes?"

Now at 3, he is only 1 standard deviation above and his height has caught up to the 95%ile as well. it is a tough struggle, because we can't reason with him to eat his vegatables and he is heavier than his 5 year old brothe, but I'm glad that we made the changes when we did and we are conscious of it.

What an idiotic thing to say! I'd be seriously peeved and give him a piece of my mind. She's two. She hasn't gone through puberty or any of that. Has he added psychic to his credentials? Chat Icon Chat Icon
She looks perfectly normal and healthy. The last thing you need to do for her at two is give her the idea that you are obsessing about her size and weight.

Sometimes when DH relays a message to me it is a little like telephone. Maybe his feelings may have changed the exact quote from the doctor. You will probabally feel so much better once you speak with the doctor!

I'm surprised people are reacting with such anger. I would give the doctor the benefit of the doubt that he is based his statement off of a growth projection chart and he isn't just saying this to be "mean" or a jerk. It sounds like he is concerned about her weight. I would take it seriously if I trusted the doctor up until then.

first, i DO NOT think your daughter looks overweight or even "bigger"... i think she looks totally "normal"

that being said, I wish my ped was firmer with my mother when i was growing up Chat Icon i wish my mother was firmer with me, also.

i was also thin, until about 8 years old. I have had weight issues ever since. i don't remember my mother EVER telling me "no".

it might be harsh but there are ways to teach our children good habits and they will thank us in the long run Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Opinions pls-taken back by dd check up today

Your daughter looks perfect. I'm really surprised at what your pediatrician told you. How can he predict how big your child will be in 16 yrs?

We have the opposite problem. DS is 75% height but only 5% weight. He is a decent eater but he prefers all these low fat foods! He looooooves fruits and veggies and doesn't love meat. He doesn't like milk either and much prefers water. Chat Icon

eta: It is never too early to promote good eating habits. I was a super skinny kid my whole life so I ate whatever I wanted and was always skinny. Now in my 30's, I'm not fat but not as skinny. I'm trying to eat healthier and it's much harder to change now.

Re: Opinions pls-taken back by dd check up today

How can they say that?

She looks healthy and normal to me. Not a bit chubby at all.

How can they know or even predict what she'll be at 18? A ton of factors are invovled, eating habits and activities, nutritional intake.. heck even the type of milk she drinks will have a different effect.

Its one thing to say "she may be.." but it better be backed up with "but a lot of factors are invovled" and to ask you to cut juice if she doesn't drink it is Chat Icon Its like if they asked me to cut AJ's candy intake, she doesnt have any intake. Heck I can't get the kid to stop eating veggies and eat some meat!

I'll let you know AJ's numbers next week. She has her 2yr check up. She's pretty small herself in relation to other 2yr olds. *shrug*

Re: Opinions pls-taken back by dd check up today

so silly.... Every child is different.
My DD was on a chubby side when she was little and a bit "overweight" (according to charts) so my PED wanted me to "try and give her more low calorie food", I never did, bc she always ate healthy (loved veggies, fruit and all that stuff that most kids hate) and never drank any juice , not even watered down bc it upset her stomach. She was just eating a lot and gaining weight more than she was supposed to, but I was never worried..... This past winter her weight gain slowed down a lot , and this spring/summer she just got really tall. Now she'll be 3 next week , 3 weeks ago we saw her PED for a "sick visit" and he said her weight is "IDEAL" (they didn't measure her height). So this is just one example of how kids can change and grow differently.
And honestly I would never listen to someone telling me what my DD's weight and height will be 15 yrs from now, not even her dr, no one knows....

Re: Opinions pls-taken back by dd check up today

I would be more terrified of giving my child an eating disorder than worrying about obesity.

DS has always been skinny.

DD was in the 95th percentile for both height and weight her first year- the Dr. never made me worry and I never did. It was weird because I am only 5'2!
But Both DH and I are slim and I knew that there was no need to worry.

Now she is 2 and she is in the 50th for weight and the 75th for height- she is very slender.

Just serve lots of veggies and fruit and tell the Dr. that he is a bit extreme- and rude!

That is ridiculous what he said to you! I have my DD's 24 month check up next month and I will get her "official" stats then however, we put her on our scale at home and she was 30lbs. and when we did her height she was about 34" so she is pretty close to your DD. She is usually 75% for height and weight and my ped always says she looks perfect and healthy. I would so not worry about what he said, it's just such a stupid thing he said!

Re: Opinions pls-taken back by dd check up today

Abby's doctor keeps and refers to her growth curve in weight and height with every visit. If she were to jump or fall exponentially at a visit, I would be told and I would have to either increase, decrease or improve her in take of food. Perhaps your pediatrician is concerned in a change? Just a thought.

Again I speak from my own experience. The heartbreak of growing up as "the fat kid" has NEVER escaped me. It is a permanent scar in my brain and my heart. Each and every time I see an over weight child, it is living the nightmare all over again and I want to shake the parents and beg them to be more careful.

When I was PG with Abby, DH and I, who are both genetically big people (me being surgically slim) SWORE up and down that we would not allow Abby to grow up this way. Who would have known we would have a difficult eater. We did take a different approach though. We don't fill her full of crappy foods, but she isn't living at Whole Foods, Fairway and Trader Joe's either. We felt the best thing we could do for her is to make activity a part of her life and routine. She has been involved in gym classes and now swimming. We want to make it fun for her so she can have treats and be healthy too. As she gets older, she will be encouraged to choose a physical activity when she is of school age - could be dance - could be ice hockey. I don't care. I just want her to be active and not end up like her mother and aunts who were 100% inactive and all obese - 2 requiring surgery or worse - her grandmother who died from heart disease brought upon by diabetes DIRECTLY related to morbid obesity.

I am very sorry about the hijack - its a very sore subject to me.

And I do agree that your doctor, right or wrong, could have used a bit more tact and sensitivity. Your child looks fine. She will be fine.

i don't. I've seen parents with eating disorders who have children with eating disorders. I also have a friend from college who swears it was her mother's constant dieting advice when she was younger that exacerbated her eating disorders as a teen/adult Chat Icon

TOTALLY AGREE!!! And if I listened to him - my son would be a freakin AMAZON since at his 24 month visit he was
37 3/4 in tall
37.5 lbs

And his ped didn't even blink an eye and just said "good job mom - nice and healthy." Gimme a break!

Sorry I don't think I was very clear with what I said. I meant that watching and being aware of what your child eats is not going to cause an eating disorder, BUT being obsessed with it could. I am aware and watch what my son eats, I have to, he is two. If it were up to him he would eat cookies, and fruit snacks all day long. All I meant was that being aware that your child is at risk for being obese is not necessarily going to cause an eating disorder.

DS will be 2 next month (23 months now )

he is about 34 inches and 25 pounds

I have heard docs can "predict" a childs future size when they are 2 , not sure how true that is tho. best way really is to look at you and DH. I know my DS will be tall and thin like we are (he is that way now)

Yeah I think its something like when girls are 16 or 18 months, double their height...and for boys when they're 2 double their height..I think, I might not be remembering this correctly

I think it is your Dr.s job to give you a heads up and advice but for some reason your dr's way of saying this is a little off Chat Icon Chat Icon plus your dd is only 23 months old. She is a beautiful, healthy child! Keep doing what you are doing! She is going to be fine!

Why would your dr predict what is going to happen 10 yrs from now... I have never heard of this.

My DS just turned 2 and he is 34 1/2 in and 26 lbs.
