Opinions pls-taken back by dd check up today

Dh took dd for a reg. check up today. All went well, except for 1 thing that took me by surprise.

Here are dd stats

33 in tall
30.0 lbs
23 months

I must say that she is adorable and her body looks adorable and perfect to me. I know that she is not a petite child but I never thought she looked like she is carrying excess weight either. Well the dr. said that w/ these measurements she is looking at being a 18 yr old that will be 5 ft 4in and 211 lbsChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I am so taken back....Why would u say that. Kids bodies change so much as they grow. They stretch they thin out and my god she is 23 months old. His advise was cut out juice. She does not drink juice.

I am going to call and speak to him myself in the am, but just wondering what ur thoughts were on this. Please feel free to share ur childs measurements around 2 yrs old big or small..

Maybe I am being a protective mom but I think this is crazy.

Here r 2 recent pics of dd, and I think she looks like a normal 23 mon. old..

She is a perfectly healthy child. The dr sounds like a moron....My Moms dr told her that I wasn't going to be above 5 feet tall. I am five ft 6 inches. I babysat for a little girl who was 20 pounds at 7 months old. She is now a healthy and skinny 5 year old....They have no idea what is going to happen 16 years down the road...

Re: Opinions pls-taken back by dd check up today

My DS is only 10 weeks old so I won't be much help. But I do have to say she looks like a perfectly normal 2 year old - she doesn't even look the least bit chubby! My DS's family is WAY off the charts when it comes to weight, but you would never know. They just have a much denser build, which is probably the same with your DD. I wouldn't worry about it - I think the charts don't work with some people's body types (including my DS).

What an idiotic thing to say! I'd be seriously peeved and give him a piece of my mind. She's two. She hasn't gone through puberty or any of that. Has he added psychic to his credentials? Chat Icon Chat Icon
She looks perfectly normal and healthy. The last thing you need to do for her at two is give her the idea that you are obsessing about her size and weight.

Who says that, especially coming from a pediatrician, I'd be so upset and would definitely second guess continuing having my child under their care, your daughter looks like a perfectly healthy size, what percentile is she falling in for height/weight?

Both my kids were always on the thin side, so sharing their percentages wouldn't be helpful.

According to this chart , she is:

At 23 months:
your child is 30 pounds, and that is
at the 87th percentile for weight.

your child is 33 inches, and that is
at the 33th percentile for height.

There are a million ways he could have said it better & yes, he should have. With obesity in children among the rise, I'm sure he's seen more than his share of overweight children struggling with weight & was trying to go for shock value. From my experience, it's an issue that starts affecting their self esteem early on (like pre-K). Kids are cruel.

Given those percentages, I'd be concerned about her weight & would probably start to cut back on juice, sweets, etc. if you give them.

Re: Opinions pls-taken back by dd check up today

I'm sorry regardless of what she looks like, aside from a kid being obese, that is the most idiotic thing I ever heard. It infuriates me when Dr's say things like that. Personally, I'd find a new Dr if that's his opinion. I could not go to a ped with that kind of attitude about my kids weight. My DS (and DD) was a chubby baby, almost 17 lbs by 4 mos and now at 4 you see the boys bone she so skinny. And my ped has never been concerned, even when I was quetioning it. If she eats fairly healthy and isn't a couch potatoe she is fine.

And PS your DD is adorable and in no way looks over weight to me.

DS was always in the 95th pct in height AND weight. Now that he looks like he is starving and you can see every bone in his body he is in the 75th! IMO Those things are not worth the paper they are written on.

Edited because I forgot to add DS was 36lbs and 39" at 4 he is 39 lbs and 41 1/2"

Well then your dr would say my kid will be Andre the giant when he is older. DS 18 month stats were
33 3/4 in tall
27.4 lbs

Stupid comment.

Re: Opinions pls-taken back by dd check up today

I must be in the minority but I think it is your doctor's job to tell you things to watch out for with your child. If he didn't say anything then I would think he was negligent. He is going by the growth curves and growth charts and if your DD continues on the same curve then she could end up being obese. However, that doesn't mean SHE WILL be. It is his job though to let you know that. If there was a risk of her getting skin cancer and there was a way to prevent it by using sunscreen he is going to recommend you use sunscreen, it is pretty much the same thing, in my opinion as warning you to watch her weight. According the growth charts when I was a kid I wasn't going to hit 5 feet. I am now 5 ft 5 in, so obviously the growth charts are not always accurate. Your doctor is looking out for the best interest of your child and I think you need to remember that.

Re: Opinions pls-taken back by dd check up today

say what??

DS is 10mo almost. he's 28" inches and 21lbs. granted he's starting to move and hasnt put on weight since his last visit at the dr a few weeks ago for his ears.

but to say that to a 2 year old is absurd.

Both my DH and brother were big babies at birth. My brother was almost 10lbs.He's now 6'2 and a string bean, and DH is 5'11 and slim.

I think everyone now is so hyper aware of obesity that it is making them nuts.

your daughter looks totally fine and healthy!

Re: Opinions pls-taken back by dd check up today

I was an obese child and to be honest I wish my pediatrician would have gone for the shock value when it came to my mother. But she did not see her own weight as an issue so I grew up as an obese teen and an obese adult who ended up having her stomach stapled at the age of 32.

My child is a VERY petite little girl despite the size of her parents and the history of obesity, heart disease and diabetes on both sides. She has been in the 10th percentile of weight since the day she was born. However, I know in time that it could all catch up with her and the last thing I want for her is to have gastric bypass just like mommy. Guess what, I was long and lanky just like her at her age. I got fat when I was approximately 8 or 9 years old and got bigger and bigger.

Though his tactics may have been crass and delivered rudely, I'd rather see a doctor be proactive than reactive. If by saying what he said now, it keeps a parent's eyes open, I'd be thankful. I realize my opinions may get flamed or not be popular, but that's how I feel.

I agree with this. Both my girls are tall and solid kids. However, thier height and weight have always been on the same curve on the percentile chart. Dr says that is very important. I still worry though.

Peyton's 2 yr check up
36lbs
37.5 inches tall
Both 97%+

sorry you had to hear that... I would be taken back as well. I think it really depends on the doctors personality. some are more sensitive than others.. some have better bedside manner.

She looks absolutely perfect to me!

No flames, I agree with you, Dr's must be proactive with weight, but IMO an overweight 8 or 9 year old is way different than a slightly over weight 3 year old. (and I don't even think she looks the slightest bit overweight)

I don't think the numbers are anything to worry about, I mean did he look at the child or just the numbers? These percentiles don't always reflect the whole picture. Plus its all about the way you say things.

Re: Opinions pls-taken back by dd check up today

I think she looks fine, but Barb's percentile's would have me a little concerned.

DS was 6lbs 11oz at birth. By his one month appt he was 10lbs 5 oz Chat Icon . I freaked, but the ped said since both his height and weight were the same (75%), not to worry. Apparently once the height and weight are more than 10% points off, there is the "potential" for issues, especially if the weight is a much higher percentile than the height.

I agree that the doctor could have been a bit nicer in his delivery, but I would take what he said and try to make some small changes.

WHAT????? That is an absolutely ridiculous thing to say, especially when looking at a 23 month old. This doctor gets a big big Chat Icon from me.

Nina was always a very short and very chunky, baby/young toddler. Now she is very slim, still wears 18 months in most things and still short. I think he should have waited to see how things progressed closer to 3.

I think now with a child's weight, as with EVERYTHING else Chat Icon people can just not use normal good judgement and go to the total and complete extreme to "CYA" -

I'm sure she's a perfectly healthy, normal kid - and whether or not she's on the bigger side for her weight at this point in her life or not, rather than the Dr. just telling you to keep an eye on her or whatever, instead they have to go to the extreme and scare the hell out of you like the kid can NEVER eat a french fry or something or she'll end up being morbidly obese - KWIM?

Re: Opinions pls-taken back by dd check up today

That does sound like a rude approach, and your DD looks perfect to me, but I too am concerned about my DD's weight, even though no one else seems to be. She has been at the top of the chart in weight since birth, but only 50% for height. She definitely has a belly and chunky thighs, but I am hoping that will change as she gets older. I have already started giving her 2% milk in half her bottles, and I will cut back on juice in the fall. I just want her to stay hydrated in teh summer bc she is very active. Oh, I also don't really give her sweets except for fruit and organic graham crackers once in a while.

Me too... I was an overweight kid and my pediatrician DID warn my mother, repeatedly. And what did she do? Put me on diet after diet after diet, instead of feeding me healthy meals and role modeling healthy behavior. It has taken me YEARS to break from those awful, old habits. And my mother, in her 70's, is STILL caught in some really vicious habits...

I also agree. I had the same experience as Bxgell2, I even remember being put on a liquid diet when I was about 9 years old. I do think his words came across as harsh but I am sure he is used to parents not listening to advice regarding weight and was trying to make the info stick. Chat Icon
