Munich

I am going to Munich in a few weeks for a conference. I will have a few days to explore, any ideas of what I should see while I am there?

Re: Munich

1. Eat at the Hofbrauhaus
2. Climb one of the church towers to see the city from above (I believe you can go up in both St. Peter's church and the Frauenkirche)
3. If it's a nice day and you have a few hours, go walking around the Englischen Garten (big park)
4. Go shopping! There are a lot of clothing stores and souvenir shops downtown.
5. If you can arrange it through your hotel concierge or on your own (there are English-speaking tour companies at the train station), there are day tours to Neuschwanstein castle and other nearby places that leave from Munich.

Re: Munich

I went to school about 2 hours west and I love Munich. Actually DH just said this morning that we should move to Munich...LOL and started to look for places to live...LOL (he has never been!) We are thinking about spending next summer there.

1. Mike's Bike Tours do it right away - it's a great way to get a sense of the city, meet people and get a quick tour.

They also have bus tours - one to Neuschwanstein. it's maybe 45 min away, but you don't want to miss it. It's really breathtaking. If you see one castle in Europe - this is the one to see.

2. Go see the Glockenspiel in Marienplatz - it's just fun and there are a lot of street performers at the time.
Also in Marienplatz, Frauenkirche, even if you don't go in, walk around the outside...it's one of the few buildings that was not destroyed in WWII, but they have left it unrepaired.

3. Like jess mentioned - Hofbrauhaus! There are tons of beer halls and this is a tourist trap, but it's a good tourist trap and a great experience to have. Liter beers (don't order the half liters or you will be made fun of) and pretzels the size of your head! try some weisswurst too (white sausage) it's only white b/c there aren't preservatives and it turns that color cooking, but my sister and I used to joke that it was brains...but it is a southern german dish.

4. If you like technology, there is a great museum on the other side of the river.

5. If you like art - they have the old museum (rennassance and baroque) and the new museum (modern)

6. University at Munich - go to see the Hans and Sophie School memorial and the white rose group. also there is a brick wall around there that has been left a memorial that has bullet holes where the nazis executed people.

7. Dachau is a short train ride away.

Great suggestions listed above. Dachau (concentration camp) was extremely powerful and moving and I recomend seeing that if you can.

Munich is a beautiful city!! The Hofbrauhaus is loud and crazy... we walked in and walked right out, not our thing, but it was cool to see it.

The subways are very easy to navigate also so you can save money on cabs.

Have a great time!!!
