New Rug and Nightstands...now need decor help!

I had my nighstands delivered this weekend and DH picked up the Jute rug I have been fawning over from West Elm :)

My master is small and the king bed and weird wall angles do not make it easy to get decent photos - but here are a few (don't mind my baseboards, we still have to finish that Chat Icon)

Any ideas for what to put on my nighstands? 1 lamp? a lamp on each side? artwork above the tables maybe? The walls feel more naked now that the nightstands are in but the room is small so I don't want to go overboard and have it feel too closed in either...but I know I need to accessorize now that the nightstands are in...

Also, this is dumb but I have no idea how to make my bed Chat Icon I think I need more pillows? Chat Icon I was thinking maybe 3 standard size pillows in the front row to matching the white quilt under my comforter? With the center pillow resting on top of the others? I'm trying to save money and I already have a bunch of standard pillows that I'm not doing anything with - I don't want to spend money on new pillows + covers...

For fun, here is the room when we first moved in:

Help me finish my bedroom! Thanks!

Gorgeous Nik! Your bedroom really is coming together. I would put one lamp on each side. Maybe some small piece of decor on each night stand also. Then I would hang something over the bed, centered. Maybe a long thin picture, horizontal.

I'd do a lamp on eat night table and art work over the bed. We have a window over ours so we didn't have to worry about artwork.
On each of our night stand we have a lamp. I have an alarm clock on mine and we both have the letter of our name in an easel. You can see the K better than mine... (on left dresser) External Image

Looks great!

I would put a lamp on each nightstand. I would also center the nightstand between the bed and wall.

I would add pillows. I have 6 pillows plus 3 throw pillows!

I agree with Jen on the art work.

I would put a lamp on one side and a stack of books on the other with a nice glass vase and some rocks or green coming out of it.

The room is gorgeous!

I think you did a beautiful job.

as for over the bed, agree something should go there but I wouldn't go with anything to symetrical.. maybe a piece of painted white manzanita branch??

thank you all for responding!

kokopelia, thank you for the pic of your room - i see how much lamps will fill up the empty space - now i just have to find a pair that i like and that are inexpensive Chat Icon Chat Icon

kimberlyscott, good idea about centering the nightstands, i am going to try that!

bicosi love the idea of something asymmetrical over the bed like a branch

love the ideas! TY!

Re: New Rug and Nightstands...now need decor help!

I LOVE that furniture!!! It's gorgeous and looks great with the paint color! I want new master bedroom furniture so badly.

I had that jute rug in our living room for a while and I just want to warn you, it grabs dust underneath it like crazy. AND it kinda ruined our floors (I know you have the same laminate) from the sun coming through. There is a permanent stain of little squares where we had this rug... so my advice is to put something under it.

I would do a glass lamp on both end tables, maybe one like this with a white shade:

Over the bed i'd do one rectangular picture or painting with some color in it. Maybe oranges and blues... or maybe a sunset pic:

Maybe these gray ones from Target. You could buy a white shade or maybe some with a pattern that would go with your room and decor. $39.99 Link

Re: New Rug and Nightstands...now need decor help!

Thanks Jess for the heads up! Was it the same rug from West Elm or do you think all Jute/Natural rugs will do that?

We put the rug down this weekend and I vacuumed it twice so far but I just checked underneath and there is a lot of dust under there! Like dust and shedding...Yikes! Chat Icon I swiffered as much as I could under the rug and rug pad and I already see the little squares even under the rug pad!!!! I wonder if it's from the stickyness of the rug pad? Or from the sun (in 2 cloudy days)? Or both? I didn't try washing it yet but I wouldn't be surprised if it left a permanent mark in the 2 days it has been down - I have been less than thrilled with the floorimg after having it for almost 1 year...Depending on how the sun comes in my sliders I can see scratches in the finish - it's only in direct sunlight and I can put my shades down to hide it (it's about 1 hour a day when the sun is glaring on the floor). I have no idea how the scratches got there as we are SUPER careful. I stopped using my Dyson and only use a Swiffer Vac now but I still find new scratches so I guess the gloss finish doesn't hold up well Chat Icon I suspect it has something to do with the angle of natural light through my sliders because if the flooring was in the front of my house I wouldn't see the marks at all.

The rug is going to stay so I'm not going to worry about the squares - no matter what there will always be a rug under the bed that will hide it...Ironically I'm actually looking for a larger living room rug to put down to cover more of the flooring in there so it hides some of the scratches when the sun is beaming in Chat Icon

I love the flooring but hate the scratching. So disappointing. LL basically said it's not their problem so we wait until we can afford a new floor I guess but I'm afraid to put anything down after this experience...They did say we could try some product called Scratch Away but I haven't tried it out yet since I bet it's not going to work...

Re: New Rug and Nightstands...now need decor help!

your bedroom looks great!!

I would definitely do lamps on each side, it frames the bed nicely.

As for what to put on each-- well, what do you need? YOu can do a combo of books, maybe a little decorative bowl to throw jewelery, etc. in.. But I would first get lamps. Sometimes they have a larger footprint than you may think.

Hmm I never noticed scratching on our floor. And we get a TON of light coming in... i'll have to really look tomorrow when I get home from work to see if there are noticeable scratches. I'm sure they are some little ones but that's going to happen with any floor.

As for the rug, we had the same exact one from West Elm. We didn't have a rug pad underneath, which was a mistake I thought... but you have one and still see the squares? I think the floors and the jute just don't mix well. I loved the look, but it was just so hard to keep the dust out too and I just got fed up with it and wanted a regular rug that I could vacuum normally... plus I was pregnant and knew that rug wasn't any good for the baby to play on. It's now sitting in our garage...

Gotcha. I can see how this rug is going to be high maintenance already Chat Icon I don't think I'd be able to keep it in my living room either since it's not the most comfortable and it is dusty. I wonder if it will get better over time after the rug sheds? In the bedroom it's just for show and doesn't really serve a function...

Maybe I have scratches because I have a dog? I'm not really sure. But I noticed a lot of them were in the pattern that I vacuum/clean in? They aren't deep scratches or gouges, just surface scratches, almost like the high shine got scratched off. Luckily you can't see them all the time and I have to close my blinds anyway at a certain time otherwise the sun is blinding Chat Icon I think that the little squares from the rug are scrathes too - it almost looks like the floor is cloudy where the square pattern is - I tried washing it but it won't come up. I stopped worrying about the floor though - if we have a kid that is anything like we were as kids my flooring will have drawings carved in it Chat Icon Chat Icon so no use worrying about every mark. Houses are meant to be lived in right? Not museums Chat Icon

Nik I have the same flooring in our Family Room, that both you & Jess have. We have scratches too, but my mom's dog does go in & out of that room to do to the backyard some times. Little bugger! Chat Icon But floors are floors and our hardwoods upstairs are scratched too in the three years we have had them.

And I also have a Jute/Cotton rug in the Family Room. It sheds all over the place and I've had it for almost a year now. So it causes dust on the floor more I think. I have a pad under it too. Now I will have to look under the rug & pad and see what it looks like. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

The scratching is prob coming from Pumpkin???

We wanted your floors but took into consideration the 12 paws that we have and opted for Pego. Not one scratch. Not totally in love with the look but, it fits our lifestyle.

And I love the lamps that Jess posted and her suggestion with a white shade.
