How do you feel about designer brand eyeglasses?

I am shopping for new eyeglasses... Will probably wear them for years... I want something plastic and stylish. I've never worn designer brand eyeglasses. I've tried on, and liked the style of, D&G, Prada, Tory Burch, Coach, Kate Spade and Burberry.

I know it's totally a personal preference, but what designers do you love enough to wear them on your eyeglasses, or is it a better idea to buy a no-name brand???

Thanks!!

Re: How do you feel about designer brand eyeglasses?

I used to work for Marchon Eyewear (designers and manufacturers of eyewear for Coach, Nautica, Sean John, Michael Kors, Pucci, DVF, Karl Lagerfeld and Calvin Klein, Fendi and Nike) A lot of what you are paying for is the name, Especially that the brand, at least in the design and look/quality of the frame especially, other than signing off on the design the design, is handled by Marchon.

The legitimate increase in cost for designer brands however is in the detailing and the lens (for sunglasses) and the fit. There is much more concern for these items and much more quality control when it comes to these things for designer brands.

I have a pair of Michael Kors, Coach, and D&G sunglasses....out of them I think the MK and Coach are the best ones.

They most definitely fit best and give great protection from the sun, more so than the D&Gs.

I am not into designer brands & I never shop by brand for my glasses, but the last few times I have gone, that really seems to be the majority of the frames they have, and there isn't too great of a price range, so I just get whatever I looks good.

I currently have Oliver Peoples frames. I have had them about a year & they haven't needed any adjustmesnts or repairs. I don't wear them all the time though.

I splurged on Chanel sunglasses a few years back and they were one of my best purchases ever!

When it came time for new glasses recently I got Chanel again and really love them.

I have had my Prada's for four years and they are still in great condition and I wear them year round. As long as you keep them in the case when your done it will be in great condition.

When did you work for Marchon? I worked there also but it was a very long time ago!!!! Anyway, my answer is this: Many of the eyeglasses that you see in stores are made by the same companies but then a designer will come along and get a license for the eyeglass company to make a line for them. So, I do not believe that there is a huge difference in quality between frames but many of the more fashion forward frames are the ones that get the designers' names on them. I'm currently wearing LaFont frames. LaFont is an eyewear designer, not someone like Calvin Klein who designs clothes and then goes and gets an eyewear line. Is there a difference? Sort of but it's mostly a matter of taste. I miss the days of getting a huge discount at Marchon and having a pair for every day of the week!!!!! Anything from Marchon will last.

From 2005-2007, I was the Marketing Manager for Nautica and Sean John. I resigned when I was on maternity leave in Sept of 2007. When did you work there, what dept? So funny.

I JUST got a new pair of MMK sunglasses through a friend who still works there, and used her discount. Its a fantastic connection to still have!

I'll just say it was before I went to law school, which was eons ago. It was just a customer service job and they were just moving from taking orders on paper to having the reps. input them into a computer (which was probably some DOS based program but I do not even remember.) At the time, the deal for employees was 1/2 off the wholesale price. I remember paying anywhere from $15 to $40 for frames and around $60 for a specific pair of sunglasses that sold for about $300 in stores. I stocked up and wore those glasses through law school. I had a guy at a local store who would give me a great price to cut my lenses.

I have been buying designer sunglasses forever (Gucci, Chanel, Dior, etc.). About 6 months ago I bought my first pair of Ray-Bans and I have to say - I LOVE them.

I feel like the lens is far higher quality than anything I have ever had before. So my advice would be to purchase sunglasses made by a striclty sunglasses manufacturer.

I have Coach reading glasses and they have held up really well. I don't think it really matters what kind of frames they are once you go to a reputable opthomologist for your prescription.

Re: How do you feel about designer brand eyeglasses?

I'm wearing LaFont - they're an eyeglass designer, not a clothing designer/perfume creator, etc. They're fun and funky - I love their designs.

That said, I love Prada frames - I tend to go for black, edgier frames. But I will try on any frame that I like and if they happen to be designer, then so be it. I don't deliberately set out to only look at/buy designer frames. They need to look and feel good, first and foremost.

Re: How do you feel about designer brand eyeglasses?

I have had Chanel regular glasses for about 3 years now. It's never about the brand.. it's really about how they look on me, and I just happened to love the way these look.

As far as sunglasses, I have had the same pair of Fendi's and Gucci's for YEARS. Every time I try to buy a new pair I can never find ones that I love as much.
