Candace Cameron: No Facebook for my kids
Actress Candace Cameron has a Full House of her own these days, raising kids Natasha, 11, Lev, 10 and Maksim, 8, with her hockey player husband Valeri Bure.
The busy mom recently talked about the challenges that come with raising kids in a society where technology rules.
“My son is in the fourth grade and I would say that 50 percent of the kids in his class have their own cell phone,” Candace says. “Fourth grade. Nine- and ten-year-olds. They have iPhones!”
Not her kids, though. Candace says that not only does she not allow cell phones, but online activities like Facebook and Twitter are out, too.
“No! [My daughter] doesn’t have a Facebook account or a Twitter account. She doesn’t even have her own computer. This was the first year we allowed her to have an email address and that’s because her school is very progressive with computers and doing work online. I am so overly protective when it comes to technology because there are so many dangers associated with it. We have had a few instances in our family where our children have seen inappropriate things on the Internet. We monitor it as closely as we can. At this age there is not a chance she will have a Facebook account. The more kids that have Facebook or Myspace and the more parents that allow it makes it that much harder for the parents that don’t want their kids to have it. There is pressure from the other kids upon our own kids. It gets tough.”

I think it's good to have a handle on what your children are doing online, but saying that a school that has email is "progressive" is really ignorant of her. It's 2010, not 1990. I just hope for the sake of her children that they are still exposed to technology or they'll be behind in life later on.

I just hope for the sake of her children that they are still exposed to technology or they'll be behind in life later on.
She was saying that her child's school does assignments online, which I think is a bit more current.
I think that it's great that she is limiting her children's exposure to the internet, in terms of social networking. My nephew is 11 and there is no way he is allowed to have a cell phone or a facebook account. There is one shared family computer. Good for Candace!

I could not agree with her more!!
I think it's absurd what some parents give/allow their children to do these days. I never had a cell phone until I was able to pay for it myself which is how it should be. I know that some will probably disagree...

to her for being a good parent. I have an almost 12 yr. old and while she has a facebook account, I check it all the time and am appaled of what I read from 10/11/12 yr. olds. Where are their parents and why are they not monitoring them?
I also do not believe that 10/11/12 yr. olds or younger need to have cellphones. Not ONE child (as they are children not adults) has given me a legitate reason WHY they "need" one.

I agree with her 100%. I really could of written this my self. It is really hard on parents who choose not to give their kids cell phones or let them have a facebook page. My niece who is 10 wants a cell phone so bad. She told me all the cool kids have phones. To me that means alot of the rich kids have phones. It is even harder on parents who maybe can't afford to pay a $100 phone bill a month.
I just feel like kids don't get to be kids anymore. They are growing up way too fast!!!
