People!

I truly have gotten so sick and tired of people deflecting and pointing the blame on anyone or thing but themselves.

You are in control of YOU...You can't blame someone else for your actions.

Re: Who do you blame for the Obesity Epidemic?

The only one that can control what you put in your mouth is you, so it's the individual.

Of course, it's hard to resist tasty treats, fast food abounds, we have busy lives, kids are over scheduled, and there are a number of other things that make it more difficult.

But, those are all just things that make it harder-not impossible-to eat well. We make the choice of what to put into our bodies.

Re: Who do you blame for the Obesity Epidemic?

At the end of the day I would have to say PEOPLE.

Now - that said - I recently learned that I was diabetic. Now that I have to be a "label reader" I find it extremely difficult to find healthy foods without constantly living on salads and chicken. All of the foods I used to love and maintain my low weight eating are huge No No's nowChat Icon In fact if I am out and having a busy day, my "fast food" choices are incredibly limited and nearly impossible to find. I did however learn the beauty of portion control. ;)

IMO, the government really should have stricter regulations over the food industries and stop allowing all of this processed, sugar filled garbage to take over 90% of the grocery stores and 99% of fast food.

Also, the price difference of unhealthy food versus healthy food is insane. So while at the end of the day it is up to the people what they spend their money on, realistically all healthy food bills would be more than some people make. Chat Icon

People....it is nobody's fault but my own that even after reading this topic I went right to McDonalds and got a 10 piece nugget meal. I could have made something healthier...as I go home for lunch...but instead of making myself a salad I organized my home office and then ran out of time....my own fault....although...if McDonad's didn't put a special spice in those nuggets than I wouldn't crave them Fortnightly....Darn you McDonald's!!

at the end of the day, it's our fault.

if we didn't buy it, it wouldn't be made.

if we didn't want it cheaper, bigger...it would be super sized and made with things that don't decompose.

is the govt in bed with the food industry? yes

do our lives leave us less time in the home sometimes? yes

but at the end of the day, we go to the super markt. we put food in front of our families.

and in this day and age, I think igorance is bliss in terms of labels and what could be in the foods we choose to eat. we don't want to look at what we are eating. b/c we need it to be cheap and quick and easy more than we need it to be healthy in those minutes at the end of the long work day.

but we have choices. my son will not have an activity every day. we will not be running around like lunatics going from thing to thing.

we will be kicking it old school.

excellent!!!! there may be hope for this nation yet!!!

regardless of how fast paced, rushed or whatever society is, we are still responsible for our own lives, the decisions we make.

No one forces anyone to eat, McDonalds, chips, Ice Cream, etc. Thats on people alone.

I do agree with this. But I also want to add that for some people it comes down to dollars and cents. It IS easier to eat fast food, but in many cases it is also cheaper.

We pay a pretty penny to eat healthfully. It IS cheaper to get 80% beef and the like from the supermarket.

Of course planning comes into play--you CAN buy a lot on sale of the 93%lean beef for example.

But for many Americans while it is easier to eat junk, it is also cheaper to feed their family this way.

true true, but there are always options. Get some generic brand frozen veggies on sale, etc. Plus, I think, if you can only afford to eat McDs (which I dont always agree with) then you need to make sure you and youre children are active enough to counteract the excessive calorie intake.

I blame the people.

Do the fast food industry and the government play a role? Of course. But they're just making unhelathy choices available... they're not forcing anyone to choose them. That's all on the people.

I don't think people become obese purely because they chose the cheaper 80% beef at the grocery store though. It's a combination of lifestyle choices involving not only the quality of food you choose, but also the quantity and your activity level... and as an OP pointed out, there ARE inexpensive, healthy options out there, they're just not as easy to find as junk food (and I'm sure they don't taste as good!). So I personally don't put much stock in the "but it's cheaper" excuse, but that's JMO.

Isn't it sad what is really available out there? FH and I started this year really paying attention to the things that we eat. We read labels every time we go to the supermarket to see what is in it. You know I can't find one yogurt that isn't filled with Fructose something or aspertine?? I would have to get the organic plain greek yogurt. I can't believe how much stuff has fructose and additives. We have now switched a good portion of our grocery shopping to the smaller organic grocery stores. This has increased our bill per week significantly, but it is so worth it.

It's a combination of everything I'd say. But people do need to learn more self control. My new favorite show right now is Loosing it with Jillian. Really makes you wanna get up and go.

Re: Who do you blame for the Obesity Epidemic?

I said other. Specifically, I mean the mentality of the people. These days people are such smart shoppers and value for dollar is an important thing. You can go to a place and get more for your money if you buy in bulk. However, portion sizes are often overlooked.

I can't quite explain exactly what I mean, but to summarize- bigger=better. Bigger isn't always better. I think that is part of the American mentality.

Re: Who do you blame for the Obesity Epidemic?

Speaking as a former obese child and adult who had bariatric surgery, I blame parents when a person is a child and I blame the individual once they become an adult.

If anyone wants me to elaborate, I will.

Sometimes people need to grow up and accept the fact that if you eat a lot, you will gain weight. END OF STORY.

the individual and only the individual! Each person knows what they need to do in order to stay at a healthy weight , if they choose not to it is 100% on them. I LOVE fast food and eat it a lot, I weight 118 lbs and am considered underweight. I excercise and eat healthy for most meals. everyone must take care of themselves

I totally agree with this.

As for the OQ, I'll put it this way:

If the demand wasn't there, it wouldnt' be made. The people get what the people want. The people want fast, cheap, tasty and easy. They don't want things that take time, require more effort, and cost more. We're an instantaneous nation. We want it now! Why do you think people stay obese? You're not going to be a magazine model overnight.

ITA with this, I won't be running around like a nut. I want to have normal family time at the dinner table. that is most important to me, not 20 activities!

Unless you are eating off of the dollar menu, I don't really think that fast food is all that cheapChat Icon Chat Icon

I can make 2 hamburgers a veggie and a baked potato for under $6.00 . If I bought that at McDonalds, it would 12.00. So, how is that cheaper?

We are a no soda house (except seltzer). My children don't drink juice (only water and milk) they rarely have sweets and they don't miss what they don't know.

On the other hand, I am over weight. I eat about 1250 calories per day and most of them come from healthy protein. I also don't drink anything but water (the occasional beer) and yet, I still struggle with my weight. It is a terrible struggle, but I am making sure my kids hopefully don't have the same problems I have.

I think it is a combination of a lot of things.

Pizza is cheap. French fries are cheap. All I know is when I'm starving and looking for something cheap to eat nearby- it's never healthy or organic.... I don't go to fast food rest, but every commercial tells you all the crap you can eat for 3.99, 4.99, etc....

i chose people..... but its really a combination of things....

we used to lead VERY active lives... farming, labor work.... so we had to eat a high calorie diet to maintain energy levels...

most of our lives now consist of sitting behind a computer or desk for 40hrs a week... and the most activity some people get is walking from the fridge back to the couch....

then you have the "soccer moms"... whos kids are SOOOOO active there is no time for a home cooked, well balanced meal... so they resort to takeout...

the food industry has been trying to meet higher demand by lowering product quality.. which introduced alternatives to pure ingredients...

to top it off... people dont actually LOOK at what they are putting in their bodes... and dont have portion control.

so at the end of the day, its really up to YOU to control what you put in your mouth....

and before i insult SOMEONE (im good at that) ..... yes there are SOME medical cases where a person honestly has very little control (I.E. hyperthyroidism)... NOT what im talking about here.. im talking about the perfectly healthy 5yr old kid being fed a McDonalds 4 times a week... and ends up suffering from Obesity...

I agree. The fast food chains certainly dont help, but they are filling a demand. If people made a choice to stop buying junk, then Im sure they would have to change to accommodate a new demand

I was thinking the same thing. My DH and I rarely get fast food or takeout and rarely go out to eat. I feel like this saves us a tremendous amount of money and calories. Heck, we even make our own pizza.

Overall, I blame people. You choose what you want to eat and whether or not you want to be sedentary or active. Obviously, there are exceptions to this.

Two friends of mine recently lost quite a bit of weight by simply exercising a few times a week and changing their diet.

My co-worker has FOUR kids under 10 who are involved in a million activities and she recently lost weight. Granted she wakes up at 4:45 am to make time to work out, but I really feel like if she can do it, anyone can.
