Re: Who do you blame for the Obesity Epidemic?

I picked other because I think it is a bit of all of the above but mainly society in general. We have become a group of lazy, rushed people, who need instant gratification. This has made products such as fast food attractive to many people because they just do not have the time or possibly the sesire to wait for a healthy meal to be cooked. The goverment and their failure to regulate the food we eat properly and allow the advetising to children that these unhealthy food places thrive on.

Re: Who do you blame for the Obesity Epidemic?

i chose people..... but its really a combination of things....

we used to lead VERY active lives... farming, labor work.... so we had to eat a high calorie diet to maintain energy levels...

most of our lives now consist of sitting behind a computer or desk for 40hrs a week... and the most activity some people get is walking from the fridge back to the couch....

then you have the "soccer moms"... whos kids are SOOOOO active there is no time for a home cooked, well balanced meal... so they resort to takeout...

the food industry has been trying to meet higher demand by lowering product quality.. which introduced alternatives to pure ingredients...

to top it off... people dont actually LOOK at what they are putting in their bodes... and dont have portion control.

so at the end of the day, its really up to YOU to control what you put in your mouth....

and before i insult SOMEONE (im good at that) ..... yes there are SOME medical cases where a person honestly has very little control (I.E. hyperthyroidism)... NOT what im talking about here.. im talking about the perfectly healthy 5yr old kid being fed a McDonalds 4 times a week... and ends up suffering from Obesity...

ahh good old instant gratification....I blame that for the immense amount of debt this country has.

I agree with this for the most part, i also picked other.
I wouldnt say the government not regulating the food. What kind of regulation do you mean?

If you watch the movie Food, Inc you will see how our food is produced and you will get an eyeful into the whole process.

Don't forget the internet and video games and kids not going out to play as much.

Fast food is cheap and easy; home cooked whole foods are not. Can I blame the government for this? I'm unsure. Blame busy parents? I'm unsure.
Blame people themselves for not taking an interest in their physical health? Possibly. But people are working so hard, commuting immense distances, running around bringing kids here and there, that there just isnt the time anymore. I actually sit on a train to commute a total of 4 hours a day!!! But I do butt squeezes like crazy! and chair pushups at my desk, just to burn some calories!

I completely agree. I definitely DO NOT blame fast food places - in fact I can't believe that people actually do, it's just ridiculous to believe that. No one puts a gun to your head and forces you to eat like complete crap.

Wait, of course people blame the fast food industry - it's never your own fault - it's gotta be other things. I refer to this condition as The Lohan Syndrome.

Like Andrew - barring medical reasons the only one to blame for your obesity is yourself. Oh and FTR - I'm not skinny and I blame no one but myself.

You can still make healthy eating choices, it can be done. You just have to sacrifice in other areas.

ITA! I also think that it is a parents responsibility to teach a child what is healthy and what is not and to get that child MOVING! I am not a skinny girl either and I can blame my parents for my eating habits up until the age where I had the conscious decision to change them.

BTW...I LOVE that you call it "The Lohan Syndrome" Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

oh most definitely! I agree 100%. But that takes time, thought, effort, and money. Have you looked at what some people have in their grocery carts? I'm just disgusted.

sugar cereals, cakes, cookies, ice cream, beef jerky (ew!), eggos, pop tarts, cheetos! somebody stop me!

I agree with this.

Except the part about the soccer moms being responsible for obsese children. It's not soccer moms running around to different activities if anything those activities would keep a child fit. My kids do plenty of activities during the week (soccer, religion, dance, etc). I think the BIG difference is that PARENTS (not MOMs) are not home to cook dinner early enough & kids prefer to leave more sedentary lives - which could also be mirroring their parents.

Re: Who do you blame for the Obesity Epidemic?

I think that all of the above is to blame...however I chose people because in the end we choose to go to a fast food restaurant, or ignore government warnings or make bad food or exercise choices. I also think that parents have a lot of obligation in teaching their children healthy eating habits and exercise practices -
I say this because my in laws never preached exercise or eating better. Even now the size portions they eat amaze me. My own family did promote exercise to an extent but did not push very healthy eating habits until I was in my late teens. I had to come up with a healthy way to live without the help of family in that sense.

So I dont mean for that statement to offend anyone at all, I just think my mine and DH's family had been more educated and made better choices than perhaps earlier in life DH & I could have done the same

Left me clarify...it was more of a reference as to the teaching of eating healthy.... if they are shown that grabbing fast food is the "RIGHT" thing to do... they will continue to do this

regardless of how fast paced, rushed or whatever society is, we are still responsible for our own lives, the decisions we make.

No one forces anyone to eat, McDonalds, chips, Ice Cream, etc. Thats on people alone.

Ourselves.

I sit all day and eat way more then I need too. I am fat because I can't stand going to the gym. I could cut out the foods but in the end I need to move more and I hate being there. We need to change our lifestyles to be more active and eat less.

Re: Who do you blame for the Obesity Epidemic?

at the end of the day, it's our fault.

if we didn't buy it, it wouldn't be made.

if we didn't want it cheaper, bigger...it would be super sized and made with things that don't decompose.

is the govt in bed with the food industry? yes

do our lives leave us less time in the home sometimes? yes

but at the end of the day, we go to the super markt. we put food in front of our families.

and in this day and age, I think igorance is bliss in terms of labels and what could be in the foods we choose to eat. we don't want to look at what we are eating. b/c we need it to be cheap and quick and easy more than we need it to be healthy in those minutes at the end of the long work day.

but we have choices. my son will not have an activity every day. we will not be running around like lunatics going from thing to thing.

we will be kicking it old school.

Re: Who do you blame for the Obesity Epidemic?

I'd say most of it is people, however there are those who have medical conditions where it is inevitable. For instance hypothyroid. But for the most part I'd say people. We are in control of our bodies and what we feed it.

I think a little bit of it has to do with when most people were younger their parents would not let them leave the table without finishing everything on their plate. Which was fine bc the portions were smaller then. NOW everything is supersized so you really need to have portion control and not go by that belief.

Another part of it has alot to do with having self control. The portions are huge nowadays and contain ALOT of calories. We need to monitor what we are eating and make sure we exercise. There is so much good tasting junk food out there it is indeed hard to keep self control especially since all the good for you foods taste so gross lol. Cardio does alot to and most people dont work this into their schedule. And for kids they are more into video games than actual physical activity. So they end up sitting, eating and gaining weight.

NY was just ranked as 36th "fattest" state. And thats coming from the article not me being "untactful".

Of course everyone is responsible for their own health, but it is not just a coincidence that that so many people happen to be obese at the same time.

There are defintely cultural changes that factor in.

agreed, but I think as a culture weve become lazier, want everything bigger and faster, but we as a society drive supply and demand, so I think again, that makes us responsible, if we didnt consume it, they wouldnt make it.

It still comes down to individual choices, and just so happens that the majority choose convenience over healthy choices.
