what's the earliest age you'd bring DC to the beach?

We have friends that were trying to convince us to come to the beach over the weekend. DS is only 3 months old and I felt like he's too young because he would end up overheating and I don't feel comfortable taking him in the water. DH said we could get a sundome but that would only keep him out of the sun, not keep him cool. Thoughts?

My DD that was born in August was out at the beach within a few weeks. (under an umbrella; and slept most of the time)

I see no problem with a 3 month old.

DD is 5 months..im still not comfortable taking her..not so much because of the heat but because its alot of humping...would need alot of stuff to keep her entertained for even a few hours.

I brought DS for the first time before he was 3 months- it was a school trip for my older DS. I kept him in the sun tent when he was sleeping, but I put his feet in the water when he was awake to keep him from getting too hot. But I'm laid back with stuff like that. He's not even 4 months and just spent a week in the pool on vacation.

i have a 9 month old and i wouldnt take her to the beach.. its too hot and they can easily get dehydrated and then on top of trying to entertain them...forget it...
also my BIL's cousin just knew of someone who almost lost their baby due to dehydration..they thought the baby was sleepin at he beach and meanwhile the child was dehydrated and was not responding...baby ended up in hospital and so forth...

Frankie just went the other day at almost 4 weeks!

He slept the entire time, and I just made sure to keep him completely out of the sun.

that is just crazy to me

I took my sons at 7 months to Disney...it was 95 degrees every day and they were fine.

what do you think about babies that live in Africa LOL

that is what my pediatrician said when I asked if it was ok if I brought the baby to the beach

seems to me that that baby just wasn't drinking enough

I brought Liam when he was a couple of months old. It is usually cooler and breezy at the beach. I wouldn't go on a 95 degree day though. I just kept Liam under an umbrella and I got a little sun tent. Liam napped in there or in the stroller. Just be prepared for him to drink more.

Re: what's the earliest age you'd bring DC to the beach?

I took Sean everywhere and anywhere -He was @ the beach at about 2 months ..........I kept him out of the sun, kept him cool by putting his feet in the water, wiping him down w/ a wet cloth - etc............

Out of the SUN, yes - but I don't really see a reason to keep a baby in the AC simply b/c it's 'too hot' outside

I wouldn't go and spend HOURS upon hours there ........but I personally think sitting at the beach in the fresh salty air is probably more comfortable for a baby that say, going for a walk or something in the same heat - KWIM?

We definitely took Landon to a local beach under 3 months. We went to Montauk for a week at 3 months old too. Kep him out of the sun, used an umbrella, kept him hydrated, etc.

I said it was crazy to me, your story about a dehydrated baby because of being at a beach...big deal that is my opinion..and obviously my doctor would agree with me as well since he stated that babies are born in Africa every day in the sweltering heat.

How would a child dehydrate just sitting there as long as they are being fed?

Where did I judge you? Chat Icon

DD is 4 months and I wouldn't take her because she's uncomfy in the heat. If she wasn't though and it was a cooler day, I'd take her if she could be kept under an umbrella the whole time. I took DD #1 to Puerto Rico when she was 5 months and she loved the water.

Re: what's the earliest age you'd bring DC to the beach?

DS was born at the end of July - I took him when he was about 3 weeks old. We went during the later part of the day and he was fine (we were there for about 2 hours). I had a 2.5 year old DD and I was not going to keep her cooped up on nice days.

I also took him to Disney when he was 10 weeks old - with the "blessing" of LIFChat Icon

I think dehydration would only be an issue if you are not on top of it.

I don't know if its because he was my 2nd DC or if it is because I am originally from Miami - life does not stop there because it is hot out just like life does not stop here when it is cold.

I say, take proper precautions and have fun!!
