this is such a tough situation for me, I have ALWAYS said this would never happen to me but after reading ALL the posts on here and the link provided, I think that things CAN happen that we never think would. I can only be vigilant and extra cautious to ensure that it does not happen
at the end of the day, loving parents are mourning their child and that breaks my heart, regardless of the cicumstances.
OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGod Stephanie you appear to have an open mind. Dare I say it: a "changed" mind????? I think that violates the LIF bylaws. I'm gonna miss ya

I think it is awesome that Stephanie is open enough to see another side. I specifically remember going back and forth after the woman on Oprah was on about our disagreeing opinions....and we agreed to disagree
I think that this is a tragic mistake and it makes my heart hurt because I am petrified that something like this could someday happen to me....especially now with two. This father and all the other parents that this has happen to I am sure are living in their own personal he!!. As far as I am concerned that is more of a punishment then any court could ever hand out.

I agree. I hate to think that one of us (DH or myself) would do it, but I can see how it could happen.
It's a sad situation all around.

Re: Another story where a baby is left in the car
Stories like this break my heart. My first reaction is to think "what kind of horrible parent could forget their child?!", but upon second thought, I see how it could happen. How many times have I gotten in the car, driven to work & actually been surprised when I realized I had pulled into the parking lot? It's almost like an auto-pilot thing & I could see how any break in routine could cause you to easily forget. The other day I went to pick my daughter up from school & when I got there I went into the backseat to get out my son since he's normally with me for the school pick-up. I went into a panic when I realized he wasn't in his carseat thinking I left him at home alone. It took a second for me to remember that just 10 minutes earlier I had left him home safely with Daddy. Now if I could forget that I didn't bring my child with me, is it that much of a stretch to forget that you DID have your child with you? The only thing that gets me is that, while it took a second, I did remember it quickly. I think about my children so frequently I just can't imagine much time going by before the light bulb went off.
I feel sick to my stomach right now imagining what it must be like for those poor babies. Ugh it's too much to think about. And the poor parents. I cannot even fathom the feeling the moment they realize they'd left the child.... and the guilt especially when it turns out so tragically. I could never live with myself thinking the suffering I caused my child It's just so awful.

I forgot to mention this before, but something like this happened to one of my MIL's friends. The wife usually took her 3 year old to day care, but this day she had something to do and had to leave early. So they discussed it and the husband was supposed to take him. Well-he forgot and left the little boy sleeping. He woke up and no one was home and he spent all day by himself He didn't eat or drink anything either. So sad. Thanks goodness everything was fine

Re: Another story where a baby is left in the car
Since this is going on 2 days later, I will respond.
I am home and showered and feeling nice and refreshed after walking 35 miles
I will just say this, and be done for a while on here (no - this isn't a whiny goodbye post)
I did not mean to offend anyone on here by going on an emotional rant about an issue that KILLS children.
I think we, as a society (including myself) are spoiled and mindless. Yup. There are societies that don't have half the sh1t we do to keep our *** es alive. War torn countries, poor countries. They don't forget about their kids. They struggle to keep their kids alive. I would say they live in continuous stress.
We are so busy with our schedules, our jobs, our lives, that a little stress makes us forget that we have kids in our cars all together?
However, if you made the mistake of forgetting your kid in a car, and wanted to take what I said personally when I reacted about someone ultimately killing their child, then I have no control over that.
If I mention I have made some stupid decisions in my life, and you want to turn my words around by saying I am calling YOU stupid, then knock yourself out. I admire that type of creativity....
I once was upset because someone on here said people shouldn't have kids unless they own a home. And then I realized... This is a stranger on the internet talking about their own personal opinions. Why am I letting them make me feel like I am not doing the best for MY family?????
Confidence in who you are and what you do comes from you. Not from someone on the internet. If you let someone govern who you are as a parent based on their own opinions, then you are going to have a loooong road ahead of you.
Because people on the internet and IRL are going to have different opinions, and may judge others based on them. Instead of getting offended by their judgement, be strong and confident in who you are and it will bounce off your back - no matter what mistakes or decisions you make. At the end of the day - you have to take pride in your choices and decisions.
Hell, my head was once on the chopping block here for not giving Cailen strawberries for dessert until he ate his dinner. AND for letting him see PG rated movies. Guess what? I did not care because I am comfortable with my choices even if others are not.
I have seen multi-page threads on many issues, arguments, turning people against each other, along with the million FM's and eye rolls and cat pictures and all sorts of hilarious JPEGS.
LIF is a microcosm of wolf packs and drama mongers. Of people ganging up when someone has a different view on something.
And, I have realized after spending way too many hours, way too many years on here - that there is a lot of emptiness on here. Yes, there is a lot of good - some wonderful support that I have been on the receiving end of, and you ladies have banded together to make some wonderful things happen for so many people, and I seriously applaud you for that.
But at the end of the day, for me, I have strong opinions and lifestyle choices that don't fit on this website anymore. And while people applaud others for having open minds, it's only when those open minds FINALLY see your view on things.
I think so many of you on here seriously rock. Lauren, I think you are a witty and strong woman and a wonderful mom. Kate - you do amazing things for your friends on here and you always have an easy going style that is admirable. Caroline - you are talented and funny and you have developed a nice little niche for yourself here on LIF.
I want to step away from the ugliness that these things can turn into sometimes
I feel I have wasted so much time on here that I could have been doing other things - and for some reason, it is finally the responses on this thread that really made me realize it. I guess I needed a few days away doing something bigger than me to realize just how big life is, and just how small people's opinions are.....

HEY! What about your favorite girl crush??? I kid, I kid. In all seriousness, although we have often found ourselves on the opposite end of the spectrum opinion wise, like this thread, I've always admired your strong voice. I wish others would engage in debates in a similar respectful, honest way, but I agree, LIF is far from what it used to be. That's why I don't hang out here nearly as much, and, I suppose, because my work and family life took over, which is as it should be.
Liza, make sure you stay in touch - you know how to reach me, and definitely give me a shout out when you're in the Philly area again

The more I think about this the more I think it is good to admit to yourself that something like this can and does happen. Fear is a good thing at times. It's the reason why I lock my doors, turn off the dryer when I leave my house and park in well lit areas. And while I may never have a home invasion, burn down my house or be attacked in the Hooters parking lot it is good to think that these things are a possibility because they make me aware and make me take precautions to prevent them. Maybe all that time I waste backing out of the driveway then pulling back in to double check that the door is locked or that the iron is unplugged will never save me but it's worth it because there may be that one time.

Re: Another story where a baby is left in the car
I saw this post right after the OP posted and thought to myself 'wow, I can't imagine the pain and hurt that mom is feeling.' While I don't have kids, I CAN imagine doing this. Not because she WANTED it to, but because by ACCIDENT it happened. I CAN imagine being so freaking exhausted that your mind slips. I CAN imagine thinking your child is safe and sound when in reality it is far from it. ACCIDENTS happen ALL the time. Doesn't make the person in charge a bad person.
I can't believe this is even a debate for some. It's tragic and unthinkable. Learn from it and move on.

Re: Another story where a baby is left in the car
These stories make me feel so sick to my stomach. I cannot imagine what a poor baby must go through...and the agony a parent would feel if this happened to them..
I read a story not too long ago where a husband and wife went grocery shopping, came home, unloaded the car and somewhere along the way there was a misunderstanding...husband thought the wife put the baby in the crib and the wife thought the husband did.
A few hours later they are horrified to find their baby in the car..baby had already died. Horribly tragic and I was sickened by it, but the couple was so so so devestated. What an awful thing to happen
