I have absolutely no:

Patience
Compassion
Understanding
Lack of judgement

And much much more when I read these stories. I think any parent who forgets he/she has a child in the car is a vile human being. VILE.

Not only because the child isn't the first thing they think about, but because they always seem to forget on the hottest days of the year.

How come we never hear about this happening in the winter? You never hear a child forgotten in winter and freezing in the car. what is it about the heat that makes parents forget they have children?????

For someone who claims to be so tolerant and supportive and always able to see the other side of things I find this post upsetting.

I have forgotten Logan in the car before.

Luckily the couple times I did it (and yes, it's happened more than once - hang me by my toenails) it was because I was out of my routine - DH was sick or away.

I did NOT forget that I had a child. Doesn't mean I love him any less.

Just means that on that occassion I had so much other stuff on my mind that in that split second I forgot.

Luckily in both cases I remembered quickly and it happened to be not scorching hot days.

The reason you hear about the hot days, btw, is because the death rate is hotter on those days, not because it doesn't happen the rest of the year.

But I guess since I'm so VILE, I shouldn't even have an opinion.

I'll let you go back to peeing in the woods with your kid now.

Lauren - the difference is: You remembered QUICKLY. THAT is what a parent does. They get that "Oh my GOD!" immediately. They don't let the whole day go by.

I don't claim to always be tolerant. And I'm not always supportive. and I *DO* get one sided about things. I'm not sure if that comes from that hippy thing that people think I have - but when it comes to the safety of a child - HELL NO.

Anyone who knows me KNOWS that this will always get me riled up. Always. Because I personally feel that children are innocents who RELY completely on someone else who is bigger and more responsible than them to keep them safe. Because they do not have the ability to unbuckle themselves and get help when they need it.

And to bring another person on this planet means that they are always your priority. Always on your mind. No matter how busy one is. Because they cannot keep themselves safe by themselves.

And I'm not sure how peeing in the woods has anything to do with this, but, ummmm - ok. I let my child pee in the woods. And I take pictures. If people want to judge me for that, then they can. We thought it was funny - but if you didn't see the humor in it, I understand. But I don;t see how that has anything to do with forgetting him n a hot day and letting him die wanting a drink and wondering where his mommy and daddy are.

I can't imagine forgetting my child in a hot car, but I am not naive and I know that anything can happen to anyone. We don't have to understand it, but I certainly won't name-call. It was obviously a terrible, terrible accident.

Thank you for posting this- as heartbreaking as it was, the tips were helpful. I just shared them with my husband and we are going to follow the teddy bear one. I especially like the idea of putting my purse/cell phone in the backseat.

Wow, I have a knot in my stomach right now. Stories like this actually kill me.

When I just had Jack I would have thought "No way could this ever happen to me" but now that I have Tyler I see that it could. I am so busy juggling a million things, thoughts in thirty different directions. We are only human. These people don't intentionally forget their babies. This is why it's called an accident.

My god, it's sickening and so upsetting. Those poor parents, and that poor little angel baby. Reading about how the mom was running to the car with her heart in her feet devastates me.

This is a heartbreaking article. I did read it. And maybe I let my emotions take over when I said these parents are "vile". But I feel it is my duty as a parent to never let that reptilian brain take over.

And again, for me (and everyone on these boards has a stand on something controvertial) this is MY thing. And I will take it to my grave. I personally feel it is a parent's job to ALWAYS think about the welfare of their child. Not be neurotic or baby proof every area of the house - but to always be aware of the thing that could harm their child. Cailen walked away from me a few months ago in the parking lot - things happen. But he is always on my mind when I go somewhere. Everywhere I go and everything I do has a Cailen-shaped imprint. Maybe it's not healthy, but it is my promise as a mother. If anyone knew the kid of mother I had, maybe it would make more sense.

But you act like they made a choice to not think about their kid. That's what pissses me off.

It's great that you are so above it all that you don't ever let anything else off your mind for a second.

When your husband is sick and you are completely sleep deprived from working full time, taking him to chemo, being a mom to a toddler and trying to just get through the damn day without a breakdown, you can report back on how great you are for keeping Cailen in the forefront of your mind and never letting it slip for a minute.

Read that article I posted. That woman was HUMAN. A GOOD human who made a bad mistake by accident.

I got LUCKY that it wasn't hot out. I got LUCKY that I happened to have my laptop in the backseat and had to go back out to the car to get it.

I hate sweeping judgements that anyone that did that was a VILE human being.

That means you are calling me a vile human being.

And the peeing in the woods thing was just because it was the last thing I remembered you posting. Tantamount to "back to your regularly scheduled programming"

Me too.

The only story that I really felt I could understand was a very tragic one where both parents were with their infant, stopped at the grocery store, and then unloaded the car - thinking the other one took the baby in. While, again, I always checked on Cailen even when I KNEW he was home during a nap, I could see the mistake in this one.

Look - this devastates me. I hate these stories. More than blatant abuse. I hate stories where a child dies because a parent forgets them. A child is gifted to us. They are fragile, helpless souls. If we don;t make them a priority all the time, who will????

It was a MISTAKE. EVERY parent makes them, unfortunately this one was tragic.

Just because they made this mistake doesn't mean they didn't have the welfare of their child on their brain, it means that they made a horrible mistake.

It is so unfortunate that on top of what this woman went through people call her names and consider her "vile"

i know what you have been through. And I can never say I know what you were going through because that experience was solely yours and you dealt with it with amazing grace and strength that I always admired. You are right - that situation - who knows. I do NOT think you are vile. Again - I got emotional. I would delete it but I'm sure it's already been quoted, and possibly saved, FM'd, God knows what.

I have gone through my own personal hell last year. Not comparable to yours, but one of the worst things to happen to me. And I was a drone of a human being. An empty shell for a while. But, if anything - for me - it made me even more aware of what - WHO - mattered to me. Again - this is me, my experience, how I think, how I am.

To me, a child depends on the parent to remember them, value them, and keep them safe. This touches me on a very deep level. So deep I am losing all sense of grammar.

I am not saying I am perfect, wonderful, flawless, whatever. There are probably a million "bad mommy" moments in my vice closet. HOWEVER - forgetting Cailen anywhere is just something that will never, ever, ever happen. EVER. And I say that with full confidence. Because on the days he is not with me I always look back. ALWAYS. I think about him all day. I am always fully aware when I am with my child. Always. You don't understand what this boy has done by being a part of my life. And if people want to get p issed at me and think I'm some awful person for saying this, so be it. I was only half alive before he came into my world. He is my everything. And that is something that is ALWAYS worth a double check for me. ALWAYS.

I think the point you are missing in all of this is that it wasn't even that the kids in these situations weren't on our minds.

I literally remember thinking about what Logan was doing in daycare then finding him in the car.

And this wasn't even when DH got sick - this was the early days - Logan was probably 5 or 6 months old and DH was travelling. I was out of my routine.

I was thinking about him - and if he was eating his puffs for them or not. Then I went back to my car.

The thing that gets me the most with this, Liza, is that I feel like you are implying that you somehow love your son more than I love mine because I made a mistake.

That is simply not true.

I don't know... may be I am off or something, may be there is something wrong with the way I think, but I can't imagine how it is possible to FORGET YOUR CHILD in the car for hours and not remember... How is it that one is not aware of their child ALL THE TIME, even when the child is not with them, I just don't get it....

I usually have the opposite problem-I forget that i am alone and broke out in cold sweat a few times when I realized that I don't see my stroller/children after i paid for my groceries only to realize that I went to the store alone and the kids are home with another adult....

My heart breaks for that parent and baby though. What an unspeakable tragedy!!

I am sure it came across that way. Everything is about perspective and filtering out what people are typing. I know I look like a b itch when I say these things. I am sorry if I offended you or anyone else. This is a deeply passionate and sore subject for me. It is not about me and Cailen. It is about the responsibilities we have as parents. It's not even about love, but how tragic it is that a helpless child relies so completely on us to keep him or her alive. I am hysterical crying about this. All it takes is 1 second to imagine Cailen hot in the car, and I shake. Life is hard and tragic and there is so little we can control. I cannot help but be hyper focused on the little bit I can control and not f uck it up. Not because I love my kid more than another mom loves her kid. But because I have lost so much in my life due to stupidity. And my child will never be on that list.

That article was enlightening. It discussed how the brain can fill in "holes" in our memory. It seems that these parents truly thought their child was in daycare- even "remembered" dropping them off.

Like Lauren just posted, it's possible to be aware of your child, but your awareness might be skewed.

This thread, the stories and especially that article are extremely valuable. People need to stop with the "will NEVER happen to me" mentality because it seems it COULD happen to anyone. We should ALL accept this and take as many steps possible to ensure it REALLY never happens to us.

I just really and truly DON'T understand... And I have been exhausted... I have been a single working mother of 2, a baby and a toddler; my son didn't sleep through the night until he was 9 months old; I have been sick as a dog while taking care of children and going to work the next day... And I STILL don't understand...

This is my thinking! No, you are not off. I did not think by starting this thread would cause so much drama. I was expressing how I felt about it. I was disgusted with the same thing you just stated... how do you FORGET for hours and not remember? That's all. This was pertaining to the story in Lakewood, NJ and that is it..Chat Icon

I just really and truly DON'T understand... And I have been exhausted... I have been a single working mother of 2, a baby and a toddler; my son didn't sleep through the night until he was 9 months old; I have been sick as a dog while taking care of children and going to work the next day... And I STILL don't understand...

This is my thinking.

This is my thinking! No, you are not off. I did not think by starting this thread would cause so much drama. I was expressing how I felt about it. I was disgusted with the same thing you just stated... how do you FORGET for hours and not remember? That's all.

I don't see it as drama at all. It's the type of topic that people get passionate about. I'm GLAD it was posted- it sparked a good conversation between DH and myself tonight- and put the issue in the forefront of my brain.

Again- that article was really good explaining HOW this type of situation could possibly happen.

ETA: the human brain can do some crazy things to our memories If you clearly remember dropping your kid off at daycare, why would you question whether you really did?

Chat Icon After reading that article I will be checking my back seat everyday and I don't even have kids. That was so heartbreaking. I'm sure no matter what name or title anyone calls that woman she calls herself far worse along with the guilt that she must live with everyday. May God bless her and her poor baby and anyone else that has experienced this awful awful tragedy.

It took a lot of courage for her to step forward and be the "face" to something like this. I'm sure she knew people would have a lot of opinions about her. If it saves even 1 child then I would think all the name calling and judgement are worth it.

Amy - I just had a discussion with DH as well. Our schedules change on a daily basis between our schedules - there are 5 schedules we deal with - mine, his, the girls, and then Cailen's. I think with us, every part of our schedule involves getting our little mascot out of the back seat, but it did have us discuss it....
