constipation - 3 week old
what can i do for DS? its been about 36 hours since DS pooped and he was really in pain, pushing, crying-screaming, very red faced for about the last three hours.
he's not one to spit up but almost all of his last bottle came up - I assume from all the pushing and crying?
can I give him a little prune juice with water (or mixed with formula)?

3 days without pooping is normal for that age- but I'd call the ped for guidance.

Re: constipation - 3 week old
My DS had lots of trouble pooping the 1st 6 weeks of his life. I'm still traumatized. I tried the prune juice but it made him really gassy and uncomfortable.
What we did was to use the thermometer trick. Take the thermometer and put lubricant on it, i think we used vaseline or aquafor, and stimulate his anus with it. Twirl the thermometer around the perimeter. If that doesn't work (and it didn't with DS at 1st) you can use a suppository. We used one at 8 days old. I remember being so scared but I did it. I think the suppository helped bc it stimulated his tushy more than bc of the glycerin. After this we had to start putting dark Karo Syrup in his bottles bc it he had trouble pooping for a while. I put 1 tsp of Karo in his bottle once per day and that that did the trick. You can use it in 2-3 bottles per day but we didn't need to. Now at 7 months, DS has no trouble. He poopied 4 times yesterday
Good luck. FM if you need to. We dealt with this a lot!

Re: constipation - 3 week old
Albert had the same issue almost around the same time. I was beside myself. DH and I gave him chammomile with his bottle. We brewed it in our Keurig and we made a bottle of 2ozs chammomile and 2ozs water to make a 4oz bottle of formula. He gave us 3 big poops the next day. He looked soo relieved.
Albert had terrible gas along with not being able to poop nd neither gripe water nor Mylicon did anything for him for the gas or poop. Chaning his formula helped the gas and he's been pretty regular with his poops since the chammomile.

Re: constipation - 3 week old
You can find dark Karo syrup in the supermarket. I'm pretty sure my ped (the GI we saw recommended it too) said to put 1 tsp in 2-3 bottles per day. I started with 1 tsp in 2 bottles and went from there. I was actually able to reduce the Karo I used to the point where it was 1/2 tsp in one bottle. Eventually i just stopped but it took a long time. Before you try the Karo though I would use either the thermometer or a glycerin suppository just to give him some relief. Then start Karo.
Also, it helps when they are upright vs pooping laying down. One morning while DH was at work I had to call my dad to come over bc my DS was struggling so much. My dad held DS against his chest while I opened his diaper and used the thermometer and then watched DS poopie. This too like everything else will pass (no pun intended).

Re: constipation - 3 week old
we would do the thermometer trick and a baby massage (rubbing his belly and moving his legs up and down)
