To tan or not to tan.

That is the question.

I'm going on a cruise in July and idk if I should go tanning beforehand to "take the edge off". I'm pretty pale, but I do get a little tan. I haven't been tanning in like 6 years so its not like I go all the time. I know its bad for me, but 3 sessions isn't too too bad, right? And I'll be wearing water babies 50 on the cruise so I wont be getting much color then.

I have done the Brazil Bronze thing and I liked it but it rubbed off (on my wedding dress) and faded in about 2 days.

Ahhhhhh, decisions decisions...

NOOOOOOOOOOOO

DON'T DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please. Save your skin. Use Jergens Natural Glow Express about a week before you go and then use Sally Hansen airbrush for legs. A couple of the girls on here have been talking about some bronzing body stuff too.

If you never do it and it will make you feel better about yourself-go for it! 3 sesisons will probably not kill youChat Icon

I use Jergen's for my legs and it's great but you will not be able to apply an all over selftanner on yourself wilthout it looking funny...

ITA!!!

Studies are now showing that tanning beds increase your risk for melanomas by 75 PERCENT! Trust me, i love the way a nice tan looks, but just can't imagine saying to myself (about anything!), "this will increase my risk of cancer by 75%... it's well worth the risk!" There are such safer alternatives!

ok im aware that tanning beds are bad and all but youre going to be in the sun for the cruise anyway.. i like to go get a base tan at a tanning salon before a vacation so i dont get BURNT on the trip..

ive gone maybe 10 times in my life.. not life threatening.. im sure my chances of getting cancer are higher breathing in NYC air.

if its a once in a while thing just do it.. but dont make a habit of it.

Im aware that tanning is not good for you...However, I am 100% Irish which means I am totally pale and completely burn in the sun so going tanning a couple of times helps reduce the risk of being completely sunburnt and miserable on vacation

I'm tanning before my trip to Mexico because I burn easy. We are going with my kids so I know we'll be outside all day. I will wear sunscreen, hat, etc but I still burn if I don't have something to start with. I figure a burn is way worse than the tanning.

Re: To tan or not to tan.

I wouldn't do it if I were you. At the age of 31 I was diagnosed with very infiltrative skin cancer on my face. It was devestating. Then, four more less infiltrative ones were found on my face (and they were tiny, but they had to come off, and I have scars.)

I then had to go through a very painful treatment to try and kill any cancers that were in early stages that were not seen by the naked eye.

It's just not worth it in my opinion.

The rays from a tanning bed/lamps are not the same as the rays from the sun. Unfortunately, I speak from experience. I used tanning beds in the early 90's before we knew the damage they could cause and I have since had numerous cancerous spots removed from my legs and arms.

I don't mean to come down on you so hard, but it is the worst thing you can do, particularly if you are very pale. Pale skin is that color for a reason - the pigment just doesn't tan like olive skin does. I have been a patient of the skin cancer surgery at NYU for years and they have educated me to the dangers of tanning, both in salons and with the real rays of the sun.

To the OP: You have a beautiful coloring. Embrace the pale and don't even worry about fake tan in a bottle. Enjoy your trip and bring loads of sunscreen. Chat Icon

I definitely would not. I tanned last year for a month before my college reunion - and this year I have about 50 more sun spots. So not worth it! Buy a good self tanner - St. Tropez is great.

Thanks Chat Icon I was never a habitual tanner. I'm not the normal case by any means. Just don't want someone to go through this, it was so horrible.

Re: To tan or not to tan.

OK, good points ladies. Thanks for putting it in perspective. Chat Icon Everyone KNOWS that tanning is obviously bad for us, salon, or real sun, but it just feels weird to be so pale on vaca.

I'm definitely going to do the spray/lotion thing.

What I usually do on vaca is wear sunblock 50 and just "lay out" or be outside for a half hour -1 hr at a time. And I keep reapplying - esp on my face. So I only get minimal color. (which is enough for me) I try to stay under an umbrella most times.

Re: To tan or not to tan.

Just embrace your paleness!!!!!

I use SPF30 (face and body). I got back from my HM from the Dom. Republic.. white. I came back from Disney, FL...white.

I don't care.

The dermatologist told me I was a PRIME candidate to get skin cancer.

A tan is NOT worth it.

This is what I was going to say. If you are THAT pale I doubt a tanning salon will do you any good either.

And I have also heard about the "myth" of the base tan. It's not true...

Go get spray tanned! It works great.
