Would you use sun block before 6 months?

DD is 4.5 months and we are all VERY fair skinned. The dr said not to use sunblock until 6 months. But What am I going to do if we are outside, put her in pants when its 80 out or keep a blanket over her?

My mil put it on her when she was about 3-3.5 months and she was fine but it was only 1 or 2 times.

Do I take the chance or just wait until 6 months?

When I tell you how fair skinned she is, it's not an understatement.

My ped said it was ok to put it on. The sun will do more harm than the sunscreen would possibly do (and so far, he has not had any reaction to it).

ETA - we started using it at 2 months when we were in Florida.

Our ped said the same exact thing. We have used it several times already.

I would always put a receiving blanket over my DC's legs...light and yet covering! I think I waited til 5-5.5 months...They shouldn't be in the sun anyway...so I guess put it on only if there is no way you can get them under cover! Even sunscreen isnt 100 % coverage...IMHO you are better off with big stroller shades and receiving blankets!

she'd prob have a heat stroke if I put a blanket over her not to mention she'd rip it right off.

My ped is very lax about a lot, but not this. She said absolutely no sunblock...so, he will be 6 months in June, so I m going to wait...I have a huge canopy on the stroller, and he is always wearing a baseball hat outside...

I don't see a difference between 5 and 6 months on this, but I am just going to wait...I have him outside a lot, but I am just careful as to for how long, and direct sun, etc....

I didnt and we had DS in April. So for the whole summer I had him either in the stroller with the shade thingy up or in the shade somewhere else. I was to nervous it would do something and just made sure that every time we were out that he was in the shade.

I just wanted to add that I use the sunblock as an extra precaution - I don't have DS in the direct sunlight, I use the sunshade and a hat, and we're getting him a tent for the beach, etc. He's just so fair.

DS wouldn't go for the blanket thing either - he kicks them off when it's cold out.

I used it when needed early on per my peds recommendation but only a handful of times. I mostly kept her covered under canopies and stuff.

Re: Would you use sun block before 6 months?

My ped said no way before 6 months. my DD was only nb- 3 months during last summer so we just kept the sun hat on her and kept her in shorts and onesies under either an umbrella or the shade from her canopy on the stroller.

Yes, but only a sunscreen that does not absorb into the skin. California baby sunscreen is very safe. I'll be using it on my newborn this summer. I have a 2yo so saying out of the sun completely is not an option.

My DD is very fair - with both girls I took them out all summer long I just made sure to dress them cooly and keep them completely out of the sun.

We still went to the park, the community pool etc - I just made sure she was in the shade. I got one of those extender canopies and would sometimes hang a blanket to block any extra sun. I never put her in pants - only dresses and those bubble outfits or rompers.

Re: Would you use sun block before 6 months?

I was told that it is better than sun exposure so I do it. I am in a tropical locale and I need her to be protected. The ped told me it was okay.

Where can I get California Baby?

Target has it, but I don't think it's any different than the other Chemical Free ones, I have California Baby and Neutrogena, and the Aveeno...(shower gifts,) and I see no difference...not that I have used it yet, but regarding chemical free...

ped told me none at all yet, not even California BabyChat Icon

I get it on diapers.com b/c sometimes they have a deal on a 2-pack (though you may not need a 2-pack for your little one). Otherwise, BRU and Target sell California Baby products.
